Rohan Connolly 'runs the rule over the best and worst of the first 11 rounds of 2005':

Furore - and upsets galore

Apparently, 'Richmond's resurgence' is considered part of the 'HIGHLIGHTS' of the season while 'Adelaide's ascent' is only a mere 'WHO'D HAVE GUESSED'.

Amusing but hardly surprising. :)

And only Roo in his team of the year so far. Who would have guessed? :(

That's ok....we don't need the publicity just yet....if we keep on winning it will come.

Connelly states: Adelaide's ascent
They have not always been pretty to watch, but the Crows have defied nearly every pundit in the country, new coach Neil Craig investing faith in little-known names such as Ben Hudson, Ben Rutten, Martin Mattner and Nathan Bock, their enthusiasm seemingly rejuvenating leaders Mark Ricciuto and Andrew McLeod.

Like Mark Ricciuto needed rejuvenating. He has been fairly quiet over the last few years, hasn't he?!

I noticed that. :o

On the subject of Roo, I'm surprised Connolly has him leading the B&F right now. Surely Goodwin would be streams ahead of him?...

is it just me or is bock a journo's favorite ?

every article about the crows he gets a mention after just three games ?

Rutten, Mattner etc have played all the games but don't get as much hype - odd ?

Well he was responsible for my username. :p

I guess it just sounds cool to say. ;)

I think most of it was fair enough. The only things I'd pick are as youve already mentioned, the difference between Adelaide and Richmonds rises should have been portrayed as very similar, not one as a highlight and the other as a who would have guessed. Also, with the best performed defense in the comp, perhaps one or two defenders could have got a gig in the AA team but his suggested players are around the mark no doubt. One other thing though, the jumper clash as a non issue? It surely is an issue. Anyone who saw the Collingwood/St.Kilda game would have to agree, that was ridiculous. The AFL at some point have to stamp their authority on this one. I wonder if Connoly is a Collingwood or Essendon fan. I'd suggest a Collingwood fan since Tarrents mark rates as a highlight, just a good mark and only one of a dozen just like it IMO. If that wins the mark of the year it would have to be rated as a pretty poor year for marks.

Martin Leslie made number 1 draft pick on beating Dermott Brereton in a state game... as Bock has made his name in pantsing Reiwoldt.

Just the mind set of the Vicentric media

Rohan posts on this board and a picture of him was floating on the main board...his computer has Essendon all over it...Caroline Wilson is the Richmond supporter.

He had to be one or the other. Those two clubs are the only ones who dont think the jumer clash problem is an issue. Its about time they were told, but with the not very courageous Andy D running the show the chances of it happeneing are very slim. It must be awfully uncomfortable having Eddies and Sheedys hands up his ass. (sorry, dont know who the Essendon President is)

Not a bad comeback from the kid I guess after his disastrous outing against Brisbane when everybody was going 'Bock is AFC's future? BWAHAHAHAHA.'

if have to agree Goodwin has had a better year than Roo and should be there.. but the one that struck me was Chad Fletcher, only on the bench, this bloke would be close to leading the brownlow at half way, a few others in there just because of their names, Fletcher should be ont he field.

The less credit they get from the Media, especially in Victoria the better; once they realise how good this guy is they will be trying hard to work to his weaknesses (mind you, he has hidden those well this year as well). The way people in Victoria glazed over Ruttens performances this year certainly is perplexing to people like us that watch him each week.

I have seen a few Vic posters on the main board with Rutten in the AA team at FB. You have to remember that the Vics don't get to see the Crows each week like we do so it is understandable that they still don't rate him like we do.

The AA team is always controversial and always will be as generally there are a number of players that could slot into the same position without there being any loss in quality.

Agreed, I was more refering to the sporting media. They seem to have been able to select Roo; yet they seemed to have skimmed over several other performing players. Fletcher could have been picked on nothing other than memories from seasons long passed.

Clearly if Rutten is going to get into the AA and be mentioned by Victorian media commentators/journalists he must start to get the ball and panic and then kick the ball as hard and wide as possible. Instead of hitting a target every time!

THE YAWNFESTS

St Kilda v Sydney (round 10, Telstra Dome)
The Swans, already under fire for their less-than-sparkling style, served up a shocker in their first visit to Melbourne for the season, managing only four scoring shots in a half. Outrated at times by SBS's The Iron Chef.

Richmond v Fremantle (round 4, MCG)
Not the Tigers' fault, just a classic Dockers' shocker. Fremantle promised much in its first MCG appearance, then delivered not a whimper, and only seven goals for the game.

Sydney v Port Adelaide (round 8, SCG)
Sloppy skills, wasted opportunities, and not even a close finish to salvage something. An absolute shocker.

Kangaroos v Sydney (round 2, Manuka)
Turgid slog of a game, redeemed only partly by the Roos' last-quarter burst.

Melbourne v Adelaide (round 7, MCG)
See immediately above, substituting Melbourne for the Kangaroos.

hmm notice a pattern here. the noble and courageous victorian team saves the day despite the evil boring interstaters trying to ruin the game.

I agree that the less media coverage the better. We've been having a fair run anyway, and it's only natural most Melbourne scribes are going to be a little less cluey on us. I've got no problems with it.

But I had to laugh when I read Inside Football yesterday, and Sunday's 3rd vs 4th clash at Shell Stadium was rated the 7th most interesting game of the coming weekend!

And Julian De Stoop thinks Rhett Biglands and Ben Marsh are leading the Crows' rucks on Sunday....hmmmm
