One of the things that concerns me is how much our defence leaks like a sieve. It doesn't take much for teams to run over the top of us when they win the ball from us.
The problem is that there is no reason why we should be doing any worse in that area than we were in 2006. Take a look at the backline we had then, during our peak performance run of games on the trot:
HB Mundy Johnson Black
B Parker McPharlin Hayden
Swap Parker for Grover and you generally have the same squad. We are missing Hayden and Black has retired, but that is by the bye. What stands out is that our backline has hardly resembled what we were putting out there in 2006, despite having very much the same players.
In 2006 we were conceding an average of 86 points a game. This year we are conceding at average of 123 points - and not one of the games has been near the 06 average.
Meanwhile, our midfield is performing almost the same as it ever was, and our forward line is doing little worse (kicking 82 points a game this year versus 95 in 2006, despite much lower output from Pav).
My belief: return the backline to what it was in 2006, with blokes like Broughton + Suban coming in as needs be. It won't make us world beaters but it will stop run on goals and perhaps win us a few more games. Mundy will never be a top class midfielder, because he cannot make enough contests - him and Johnson are far better suited to reading the play at half back. When Johnson was doing that on the weekend, we had the lowest score kicked against us this year and came the closest to winning.
