Thought it would be fun to see what the team looked like before Bomber took over just to see what type of job he's done. Picked the side based on amount of games played that year:

B: B.Sholl B.Graham B.Sanderson
HB: D.Milburn T.McGrath M.Mansfield
C: P.Riccardi G.Kilpatrick L.Pickering
HF: D.Mensch B.Stoneham C.Bizzell
F: J.Snell J.Mooney R.Burns
R: S.King P.Corrigan S.Arnott
Int: J.Barnes D.Lowther S.Bamford D.Clarke
Emg: T.Lynch C.Steinfort G.Hocking (only here because he played the least games)

Really a bunch of old blokes on the way out with young blokes that weren't good enough.
Interesting to note just 4 blokes remain from that list. I guess it is 9 years on though so you would expect it.

Anyway, good work from Wells and Bomber. Good time to be a Cat. Finally.

wasn't wojo harls sclo on the playing list???

Yes, but they didn't play much at all during 1999, hence they didn't make the side. It is the team that played the most games that year, so the one you would have been most likely to watch.

I must be going blind, I can only see 2 that are still playing AFL from that team - Milburn and King.

In the team there is only one still playing for the Cats. Milburn. On the list there were four, adding Scarlett, Harley and Wojcinski. They are not in the side there because they barely played all of that year.

4? Only Milburn is still a Cat. King is still playing. That's 2

2 thoughts came to mind straight away when looking at that team:

1) Thank the lord that Gary Ayres was poached by the Crows. From memory he had some time left on his contract when he left, which we would not have been able to afford to pay out early if we tried to sack him. Him quitting, rather than being sacked meant we didn't have to pay out his contract. We could have easily been stuck with him for another year (or 2?).

2) Man I wish Ricco would have been able to play for 1 more year and get a premiership medal. A true gentleman, and a magnificent servant of the Cats.

An extension to point 1 - what the hell were the Crows thinking? Did anyone actually believe that Ayres could coach? He was easily the worst coach I have seen during my time supporting Geelong.

That 1999 team won the first 5 and lost 9 in a row haha Hathworn started the rut i think with a 3 point win!

I rememebr that game well! Milburn had a great game for the cats that day!
That team was not a bad team! Just got into a losing habit and things went down hill from there!

THis is not a shot at anyone but its funny how we damm teams of the past especially after last year. The Geelong teams of the 90s were sensational. Only one team can win a flag doesnt mean 15 other teams are all crap!

yeah agree with ricco it would of been great if ricco could played one more year and got a medal after all the hard times he went though

and on Ayres l dont have much time for him,but l think he's coaching record is preety good with better than 50 % win ratio

He did inherit a side who had played in the grand final the year before, and had players like Couch, Hocking, Stoneham and Ablett senior running around though.

His best effort as coach was 1997 IMO. We played a more defensive style of footy that year, and finished 2nd on the ladder by percentage after the H&A season, and got dudded by a crap finals system (essentially playing two away finals even though we finished 2nd).

yeah 1997 was crap with the dodgy finals set up he also had a good year in 1995 a grand final ..........sadly that was a sh@t day

I agree on Ayres' limitations but, main point, and not often commented on: wasn't 1995 the year we finished 5th and with (1) the crap finals system and (2) results of other finals games outside our control, we ended up attempting to beat the 4th side, 3rd side, 2nd side and then the top side in successive weeks?
Big ask - no wonder we stumbled at the last jump!

no, we finished 2nd in 1995 - Carlton clearly better than us with their 20-2 win/loss. We were 16-6

Devine wasn't too flash

As a strategic coach you are probably right, but geez he did get some quality young players down to the club.

When Devine came to the club, we were an old side going nowhere. When he left, we were set up to contend for the next 5 years. Blight was the man to cap off some of Devine's good work I reckon.

Ayres on the other hand left our list threadbare and in dire need of overhaul. Too many recycled players came in as an attempt to shore up his job. As I said previously, I will always be grateful to Adelaide for taking him off our hands without us having to pay him out.

You're right, but recruiting wasn't as cutthroat back then, lists were more expansive and clubs were able to have more spuds taking a spot. I was only young when Devine had his tenure, but I remember 1988 well enough and when we finished about 9th or 10th that year I took a lot of grief from the overwhelming majority of kids, who barracked for Essendon/Carlton/Hawthorn. I guess the biggest pity out of that period, rather than actually losing the '89 grand final, was that we didn't/were unable to retain a lot of those promising forwards that we had - Exell, D. Cameron, Lindner (very versatile). We became far too Ablett-centric, with Brownless as a bit-player for most of the time.

What a great player he was!:thumbsu:
