Discussion The 2009 Forward Six

This is the question that just doesn't go away.

How would you fill in the following for next year?

FF: _________,____________,___________
HF: _________,____________,___________
Forward rotations: _________,____________

Personally, I'm taking a leaf out of Punter's book, and saying 2 talls, 2 smalls, 2 mid-sized. I'll add that, imo, the 2 talls take the centre, and a small and mid on either flank. I'll also add that I think about 3 should permanently stay there, and about 3 should be able to run around into the midfield where necessary. I also add two players that can play in the midfield/bench position, but drop into the forward line at times, to rotate with one of the permanents. With that said, my proposed forward line is:

FF: Milne (small, stay), McEvoy (tall), Schneider (small, run)
HF: Maguire (mid, stay), Riewoldt (tall, run), Goddard (mid, run)
Forward rotations: Birss (small), Kosi (tall)

That's my guess. I know that some of us want Goddard in the midfield (actually, I think we want three Goddard clones, one for the back, mid and forward lines!) - I'm placing him in the forward line, as this is our dire need, and he's the best kick we've got. I'm using Goose in the forward line, because I think he's just not up to the backline stuff any more. Besides, both Goddard and Goose will be good hard defensive forwards, which is something we need. I'm suggesting Kosi and Macca rotate between running around in the ruck and playing in the forward line.

Thoughts?

Interesting about Goose in the forward line.

If he plays in the backline S. Fisher could be rotated thru the forward line as (as a bit of our Mr. Fix It) as he looks pretty dangerous as a forward.

has goose player as a forward before? if so, was it a success?

Yes, if only we had 2 Roo's and 3 Goddards. Then we'd have a flag sewn up. :p

I doubt Macca will play FF starting next year. Surely Allen would have a better chance.

Dont forget Armo, Eddy and Jones (or one of) will probably have to figure in the Forward 6 as well.

And yeah, Goose on the Forward line, worth trying, but shouldn't put too much on it happening.

Goose is one of the worst kicks for goal I've ever seen, a bit of practice could change that (or A LOT) however. I reckon we need Goose in the backline tho, then we can have BJ wherever and Gram in the midfield.

Schneider Plays his lead up/crumbing role, he's really a small that plays like a medium forward

Riewoldt Self explanatory

Allen like him as a lead up forward, doesn't matter if he doesn't kick goals, good for structure reasons

Kosi/McEvoy one of them rucking and other in the forward line

Milne had a great season, I'd like to see him rotate with Schneider so he gets more of the pill and becomes less of a liablity when the ball isn't getting there, but can't argue with 56 goals.

Goddard This guy to play the Porplyzia half forward type role, he'll be great for us

Mid having rest Don't see another forward option there

I dont see anything in Goose's favour as a forward, except his height.
Cannot kick or mark as well as Sam Fisher or Goddard.
Armo seems to be getting groomed for a midfield spot, but I think he would go OK at half forward. He has a great kick and can tackle.
I don't really like Jones as a forward because ( along with Hayes, Raph, X ) he is not the greatest kick for goals.
Whether there is a spot for Gwilt will depend on himself and also the younger guys. He looked OK this year but didn't get much in the way of results.
I'm not sure whether Macca will get selected much. His performance in VFL this year indicated not quite ready yet. Allen will probably get a good run.

The NAB cup will sure be interesting.

My starting team for the first round NAB cup would look something like:

B Geary, Gilbert, Attard
HB Raph Goose Gram
C Dalsanto Ball Eddy
HF Armo Fisher Allen
F Steven Gwilt Milne
Follow Jones, Kosi, Baker
Bench Macca, X, Miles, McQualter

Assuming all these guys are still there.

I'd like to see McEvoy be told that he's guarenteed the first three games of next year. Get his confidence up and he should work that little bit harder to show his worth.

i actually would really like to see that team play a couple of praccy matches, sort of the future right there ey, plus roo..
i think it would be good.
i saw cj at the gym today and he's looking fit, id love for him to have a great year next year...

HF: Maguire Riewoldt Schneider
FF: Milne (KPP) (Mid Sized Fwd)

Main problem with the forward line is we have no one we can rely on kicking us bags of goals besides Riewoldt. Milne won't, only in games where we win convincingly or the midfield are winning the ball. Schneider, same as Milne. Gwilt, no. Allen, no. Gardiner, no. Kosi, he could do it. But maybe once or twice a year, not a forward. McEvoy i hoping will be more of a ruck than a forward. Hoping.

Get Maguire down into the forward line now! Strong body, huge kick, gives a good honest contest. Another option to kick us goals.

Schnieder went through his best games for the club playing as a lead up small, up around the 50 delivering the ball to the forwards. He gets into the game this way and doesn't get lost in the 50 when the balls not there.

Goodard and Fisher would rather keep in the midfield or backline. Their delivery and disposal is first class. Very few who can deliver a ball like they can.

There are about 6 KP forwards in the top 40 of this draft, all with talent and potential. Need to grab us one.

Lewis Johnstone - 1st round
Paul Cahill - 2nd
Tom Lynch - 2nd
Mitch Brown - 2nd/3rd <--- Will be a bargain!
Aaron Cornelius - 2nd
Ryan Schoenmakers - 2nd

Or even scout the SANFL/WAFL/VFL for a ready made, developed forward. That way he can step in pretty much straight away and give us a goal kicking target.

The comp won't be as weak as it was next year. We're going to have to have a better functioning forward line with a plan, to improve. Stick a gorilla down there, i don't care as long as it kicks us some goals.

A player in the mould of ROK or Williams we desperately need. Strong bodied, smaller forward who can kick us bags of goals. Yarran could be this player, if he works on his fitness and endurance he could be better than ROK. Doubt we will pick him up, but there's still a chance. Tom Rockliff is another, should go in the 2nd round, possibly even 1st round. But definitely need a player like that.

I know that being 27/28 could be a downfall, but what if we pick James Podsiadly from the VFL. He is a ready made, developed forward, and has proved his worth time and time again in the VFL.

played footy with mitch brown, absolute star player and bloke.
bargain as you said

HF: Gwilt Riewoldt Schneider/Armitage/Goddard

Eddy/Scheinder Allen/Kosi Milne/Armitage/XClarke

Gwilt is a big question mark, has the body and long kick but is inconsistent.

Eddy has good defensive pressure

Armitage is a good kick for goal and could be a crumber

X Clarke would be handy for defensive pressure and can crumb, also kick straight

Scheinder can be the lead up forward and crumber as well

We have a lot of options, but its good to have a solid structure in the forward line

THOUGHTS?

mmm... Where did the rest of my post go? Oh well i can't be stuffed writing it again right now. All i gotta say is i hope he doesn't play Armitage or Steven or one of the rising midfielders, it doesn't do them any good or the team any good for that matter. Play them in their position where they do their best stuff. Saints 09 (Y)

i think coaches play there young midfielders up forward for a seoson or 2 so they kick more goals later on in their careers.. which is something we lack atm...

hf: Goddard, Kosi/okeefe, shneider
ff: Milne, Reiwoldt, steven/armo/ball rotating..

please dont play goose forward he is a backmen and should play backline geez :confused:abit confused with peoples opinions on here

HF: probably rotating mid Riewoldt Schneider
FF: Milne Kosi McEvoy/Allen
