Someone suggested it was time to start a fresh thread on the SANFL, and with the news of the top up players in today, I thought I'd get the ball rolling.

Norwood and Centrals are not going to supply top up players to the Crows, while the other 6 clubs (excluding Port) have opted in.

Six clubs have agreed to supply top-up players for the Adelaide Football Club’s team in the SANFL next year.

North Adelaide, Glenelg, Woodville-West Torrens, Sturt, West Adelaide and South Adelaide are all in favour of providing promising players an opportunity to further themselves at league level with the Crows in 2014.

Despite Norwood and Central District choosing not to be involved next season, Crows football operations manager Phil Harper is encouraged the majority will have some input.

‘’We’re certainly pleased we can work with the SANFL clubs,’’ Harper said.

‘’That’s what the deal was in the first place, to work with the clubs and turn it into a positive where someone who probably wouldn’t have got an opportunity at another time, finds themself with an opportunity to prove themself at league level.

‘’It’s about trying to get a win-win for all parties.’’

It's also very likely Ian Callinan will be the inaugural captain of the side.

Harper admitted Central premiership star Ian Callinan was the frontrunner to be the team’s inaugural captain after being named as a playing assistant coach last week.

‘’We haven’t made a final decision on that but he would be a chance,’’ Harper said of Callinan, who was delisted by the Crows last month after playing 32 AFL matches.

‘’For a start, given he is the only one assured of playing all of the time as the top-ups may not and even the other players on our list may not as they could be upgraded to play in the AFL team, he is as good a chance as anyone for that role.

‘’For young people trying to prove themselves, you couldn’t get a better role model than Ian Callinan.’’

We are not going to gave an academy side like Port, are we?

Will this change in future years?

Looking forward to the SANFL next year as I have always shown minimal interest in it. Will attend as many crows matches as I can.

Any idea how the structure of the SANFL fixture will look?

Last couple of seasons each team has played 20 games, which has meant each club played four clubs twice and played the other four clubs a third time...

With Adelaide joining, we have ten teams. An even draw of two games against each club will make an 18 game season... Will the SANFL drop two games or will there be an awkward 'triple up' against only two clubs?

Will the teams that get a triple up against Adelaide, lose any home games against other clubs, considering Adelaide will always be the away team? Potentially two clubs will have three home games a season against Adelaide.....

Also the news of Adelaide have one home game a season against Port out in regional areas is a pretty cool idea...

I think it'll be a home-away fixture: so 18 games, no byes.
I think there will be some breaks for the state game and rounds of the who cares cup for Foxtel.
I think if we go 18 rounds we will have a set state game bye round and some split rounds so we end up with the local grand final a week after the AFL as normal.

I love the Crows but if I go to a match I'll be barracking against them.
I will certainly barrack for the Eagles over the Crows reserves but I reckon the Crows Port reserves match will be awesome. A good chance for a trip to Clare.

Query.... we have Gus Graham, Shaun McKernan, then Jack Osborn on the rookie list and we are looking at another ruckman in the Rookie Draft...how do we fit and play them all in the reserves??

Osborn can play forward, McKernan forward back or ruck, and Graham can play ruck or bench.

I can see the concern about fitting all of those talls into the reserves side, on the other hand, being able to directly compare and develop these players may make us more efficient as far as speeding up development, knowing who is going to make it quicker and getting them ready for a specific role quicker.

Totally agree, putting the ruckman up forward and in defense is a huge bonus. When they are breaking into the AFL side they will probably spend a lot of time in those positions in the early part of their career to develop. All ruckman should learn to play these positions and would have untold benefit for when they actually are playing around the ground in the AFL. Its not all about the hitout. As proven with Cox he does so much work around the ground, and makes him so damaging. The reserves may need to come to grips with playing so many talls but thats what its about development

My guess would be they would look to develop them in other roles as well, and they would either rotate, or they would spend one game focused entirely on the alternate role while another ruckman rucks, and then swap over on the next game.

Crows ruckman plays forward/back for allocated SANFL team: "Their development!! The nasty SANFL team is ruining their development!! We need our own reserves team!!"

Crows ruckman plays forward/back for Crows reserves: "It will be beneficial to their development for them to learn other positions."

I guess the benefit will be we can give them some amount of ruck time throughout the season, rather than only using them forward/back.
