Capital football has confirmed they will continue to operate Canberra United (and, apparently, will be their last year operating the franchise)

A bad decision from the start comes back to bite the league on the ass.

Melbourne is too small for 3 aleague teams.
City are lucky to have the money to keep them going with a small fan base, desite being in a large population centre (and being owner by an epl side)

Western United has eight days to appeal against the decision, but if it is not overturned, the A-League Men will kick off in October with 12 teams, while the A-League Women will be reduced to 11 teams.

In a statement, the club said it was “bitterly disappointed” by the decision and will lodge an appeal “with faith of a positive outcome as the sale of the club and injection of capital from KAM Melbourne continues to progress”.

FA would not reveal the members of the first instance board, and would only say they were independent of the federation, the APL and the clubs.

Western United was always a bad license to grant.

Two Melbourne teams enough… Victory got too much of a supporter base head start on the other clubs

Canberra and Christchurch the next licences that should be considered

Cant see the consortium to buy them out following through on it now…

Western united to hopefully exist still as a VPL team for the truganina area. Ironbark a good facility for that and nearby planned train station will still open

What are the grounds for an appeal? They couldn't come up with the money first time round what would make the league satisfied they can still stamp up? I mean its not like they can launch a grassroots movement like the Bulldogs back 1989 they don't have enough fans or members to care.

Victoria could handle 3. Geelong. SE Melb. MV.

With City with their money you could argue Melbourne could handle 3. But one of the 3 had to be out the other side of Melbourne. Tarneit is so far West that it was almost a suburban side. Most of the real western suburbs football fans were already MV supporters. Same can be said for the SE but it's a more established big corridor which is what Tarneit and Wyndham will be in 2040+, problem was they got a licence 20 years too soon

I 100% agree in regard to Victoria handling 3 teams, especially if you can get the Geelong community to buy in. I just dont think Melbourne has the space for 3 aleague sides ccurrently.

The main problem with western is/was the reliance on property development. If they had the money and development right (someone like stock land on board as an owner of the club for example) I think they would have the ability to build with the area.

If city were willing to move to the south east full time, which they aren't, then i think they could build the base properly. It would be interesting to see what city would of done if team 11 got up instead of western.

City can't get support into an area because they're city. PL still dictates a lot of how we support the sport. Won't get a Liverpool or United fan support city

As city are already based in Casey, it is a natural fit to build support and be the local club. Based on my limited knowledge of suburban Melbourne, it would be difficult to get those fans they get by being based in and around Casey to games in inner Melbourne. And to your point how are you able to build a fan base in all of Melbourne and/or south east Melbourne by marketing yourself as the cities team.
