Round 7, 1978. Carlton v Collingwood at Victoria Park. Carlton sitting on 1 & 5, second bottom on the ladder. Jezza's first match as captain-coach. A gloomy, cold, wet May afternoon. The match was close all day, but a couple of classy goals from Rod Ashman in the last quarter saw us open an almost 3 goal margin, which we held until the final siren. Jezza's excitement when the siren went indicated just how important this game was for the club's future.

Less than 18 months later the club had won its 12th premiership. Of course we went on to win 2 more premierships in '81 & '82, with many of the players who were involved on that May afternoon in 1978. This game was a major stepping stone in our club becoming the most successful club of all time.

That's 2 votes for that game. Must have been a blinder. :thumbsu:

99 against the don's was huge...what an awesome day.

this game truely sticks in my mind

Carl V Ess in 2001 or 2002

we had no Bradley, Kouta, Allan, SOS and a few others

Lappin kicked a nice running goal from inside the square, Massie played on Lucas and Fev kicked a few

But this just showed that the team played to the game plan, played man on man and knew if you beat your opponent you would win the game!!

was a great night game!! these kind of games are the ones that forge the true spirit of the blues!!

I agree - i remember i tore the ligaments in my ankle during that game - standing on the chair trying to get over a row. Missed half of the first quarter haha - but in the end i didn't care, it was one of the best and most sweetest games to win, especially while sitting with my family who are Essendon supporters.

All i remember was Culpitt and Nelson running a muck that day, extracting the ball from the packs and breaking away.
