The Big Games

I genuinely believe Round 1, 2008 will be a pivotal day in the history of the CFC. Over the years there have been games that have gone into folklore for one reason or another. A new player arrives, a victory against impossible adversity, an extraordinary score, unbelievable individual or group performances. Can I conservatively predict 60,000 at the G to see the start of a new chapter for this club? Should all our boys be available and up and about (some optimism here) I expect the excitement to reach almost unheard of proportions amongst fans, the media and importantly, the players.

Feel free to list other games that have forged the Carlton legend into the minds of all who witnessed them. Others with a better sense of history and better memory than me will no doubt have some favourites to bring up from the vaults. A couple that come to mind are the Round 3 game this year where I witnessed that mighty comeback against the Bombers. It unleashed a torrent of optimism that lasted about 3 minutes. But gameplan and Fevola were on everybodys lips that was for sure. The 99 PF still the greatest day for me at the footy. The 72 GF where we were supposed to get wiped by the Tigers as they’d done to us in the Second Semi that year. Go your hardest Carlton fans. The games that stand out as the great moments in our history.

Lappin kicked a nice running goal from inside the square, Massie played on Lucas and Fev kicked a few

But this just showed that the team played to the game plan, played man on man and knew if you beat your opponent you would win the game!!

was a great night game!! these kind of games are the ones that forge the true spirit of the blues!!

I am honestly expecting 80,000 at the MCG Round 1 2008.

A lot of Carlton supporters (35-40k) Richmond supporters (35k) and a lot of AFL supporters for a glimpse of Judd and the new young navy blues..

No doubt the 1 point victory over the Eagles Round 21 (or was it 20) of 1995. They the reigning premier, us the tearaway minor premiers, us not needing a win except to make a statement and keep the streak going.

Neither side shirked a contest, it was gutbusting running, second and third efforts, stars standing up, wearing one after every disposal. By the end our streak grew by one and the myths about us wilting under pressure were dispelled completely.

What an awesome match that was!

From that same year I could also point to the prelim against the Roos. We were a better team that year for sure but we know the Roos were on the rise as evidenced by their flag the following year.

The Roos fought back to 19 points down and we had lost Brown, Dean was KO'd in a contest and Diesel had headed down the race. It was looking a little ominous.

Kouta and SOS continued their domination, Diesel returned and we blew them out of the water in the last to win by 10 goals. Gutsy gutsy stuff by a team with everything to lose.

I was there. Most of the missing were last minute from memory. I drove slower and slower the closer I got to the ground as the radio came across with more withdrawals. Didn't Fletcher of all people take a nice grab and goal that night? Great game.

The 3 greatest games that I have ever witnessed, from a Carlton perspective are:

1) 1995 Grand Final-was only 6 at the time, but ranks up there as one of the happiest days of my life. What a feeling. The ultimate achievement

2) 1999 Preliminary Final-Winning a preliminary final by a point, against our 2nd biggest rival, in a game that we were not expected to win. Simply an unbelelievable game that I will remember forever-probably the best game of football that I have ever been to. Fraser Brown is my hero.

3) Round 3, 2007-In front of over 65,000 fans at the MCG, we completed the best comeback that I have ever seen Carlton make. 48 points down in the 2nd quarter, when Fev started to rip the Essendon defense to shreds, ending up with 8 goals. Not much beats coming back and snatching victory from the Bummers in that fashion.

I have a feeling that round 1, 2008 vs the Tigers will be something special to watch as well.

yeah all were last minute changes.

dont remember if Fletcher kicked any goals but i also remember Vance playing and almost stuffed up the game!!

but Hoops kicked a few handy goals too. He was running to front and centre of a marking contest and he picked it up without breaking stride and kicked a great goal from around 50!!

What a game! In the same match i believe an A.Koutoufides took something like 18 marks and had above 30 touches. Wasn't that also the game Watters of the eagles kicked the ball through in the goal square and Diesel threw his hands up and got payed the goal?

I was there for that match. My mum won tickets to the game and I had just came back from London the first time.

The atmosphere was fantastic and walking out of subi even the weagles fans knew that they had seen a "match" and there was no agro towards the blues fans this day.

For me, probably the biggest game I have ever seen was the '72 grand final... what a game that was

Thinking about it... that game more than anything might be why the tiges fans hate us so much

Round 7, 1978 v Collingwood for me.

Jezzas first game as coach. and Carltons revival.
Ian Stewart had been and gone in 3 weeks, Serge had gone,
and Jezza was pretty much last straw to coach.

He had an ageing list, Walls wanted out, Jones and McKay were on their last legs. Carlton had only won one game, and was up against Collingwood at Victoria Park the previous years grand finalist.

No-one gave us much of a show, but he started playing kids
(Sheldon, Buckley and Harmes), and we knocked them off on their own dung heap.

He trained them hard, moved McKay to CHB, got Percy fit again and we went on to win 13 of the next 16 games and ended up in the finals.

But that game in 1978 with no boom recruits in that team, turning over the list, playing kids and sheer bloody hard work, put Carlton back on track for a flag the next year.
And if he had stayed, who knows??? we did win 3 out of 4 flags in that era.

1999 prelim was pretty flash also.

No, wrong game. The one I am talking about was at Subi. Earl Spalding delivered a massive hip and shoulder on someone (may have been McKenna). I think Mainwaring missed a shot at goal to win it late.

I'll stick my neck out. Was it a set shot from the right hand pocket? Possibly a poster? They were sensational games between us and WC through that era.

Yeah agree. There's going to be a lot of pressure on the Blues to get that first match under their belt so we dont have to cop the flack from every supporter from every other club other than the blues
