I understand he has his own role down back, seen him play loose man a few times. just wondering because 2010 he seemed to look far more impressive than he has done the past couple years, some people said it's personal life but it appears he may just be adjusting to a new role and making way for young lads to come through.

I thought 2010 was a career best year for him and he was a good bit down on that last year which didn't seem to get much attention in the press or anything really. This year I think he is up a bit from last but still well below his best

He's the general in the backline. We try and get him free ad when we do the whole team looks infinitely better. But the opposition knows this and usually puts a fair bit of work into him so he can't always get free. They try and shut him out of the game and sometimes it works.

Just something for people to think about for those who think he's not so good any mre.

Has he gone backwards, or has the rest of the team moved forward?

I suspect it's more of the latter, and if that means he's not a standout any more, that's a good thing.

HUH??? has been much maligned over the stretch, but from what I have seen this year, give or take a game or 2, he has been super, in the overall context of steering a steady course out of the back line this year and with the luxury of a pretty competitive support crew has snuck up the ground and become a link man into the F50..What games have you guys been watching this year? I cant even remember the shitness of 2010..

Newman has not necessarily gone backwards, it just he has been our best defender for the last 6-7 years. He had only minimum support over those years. Now, the defense has improved under Dimma, so he is no longer the influential player that he was. He does not have to carry the backline any longer. This should be seen as a positive. Having said that, he has made some errors under pressure this year, which is probably because he is not used to using the support around him.

I'd like to see him released on to a wing, or even play up forward. I think he needs "reinvention" for the last few years of his career. Very penetrating kick. I think Grimes and Rance as good backline "Generals".

This is another thread that proves my theory that Richmond supporters have the least amount of knowledge about footy.

This, was hoping for some well structured and thought out responses, maybe even a few people knowing enough to read some of the tactics newman is using.

I even tried to dismiss the whole 'he's old and has a wife now' thing in the OP that i hear so many people at the footy yarn on about

Was worth a crack anyway lol

Has had a very very good year , just cops critiscm on here because some think that a clubs captain , should be the clubs best player .

Agree! Think he's changed his game and is very focussed on results now and getting best out of everyone else at this point in time and that means that he doesn't play role he used to in years gone by.

Rate him very highly and look forward to him having some tremendous success over the final years of his playing career!!
