The Clock!

I'm more concerned that there isn't a countdown clock visible to the player.

I thought about this last week with the Petrenko goal against North.
It was a big risk to kick out of the air and he said he did it because he didn't want the siren to go.
I don't understand this, every sport has the time clearly displayed to players, if he'd been more aware that he had 20 sec to go he would have picked it up and made sure of it.
I think there needs to be the countdown clock at grounds and I much prefer a countdown clock on TV.

Its stupid is there nothing they won't change

Errr ................ helloooooooo ..........

The count-up (?? kooky name of it ??) was how it had been for 50 years or more, the new countdown clock is a recent phenomenon (again, it would of been the brain-wave of some wet-behind-the-ears tugger who wanted to try and impress) and some people don't know anything but that way.

Let's go back to how it originally was, you don't know how much time is left either on the clocks at the ground and those on the TV, makes it so much more exciting.

i reckon it's great, the 2010 drawn grand final would've been even better had there been a continuous clock because ya kinda knew it was gonna be a draw once collingwood got it out of their defensive 50
exactly.

The 2006 GF is a great example of a clock counting up making the sound of the siren so exhillarating. Had it been a count down clock, Eagles fans would have known that as soon as Rowan Jones won the ball in the centre that the game was ours. And we could start celebrating before the last throw-in inside Sydneys F50. But with the count up clock, i was literally screaming my lungs out right until the siren went, and when the siren did finally go it was heckin'g awesome.

I liked the five minute warning. When it switched over to the count up clock, you knew exactly how long was left, but then from then on you only had a vague idea. If it went at the 24-minute mark you knew that at the 30-minute mark there was only one or two minutes left at the most. Really added to the suspense for mine. The last quarter of the 2005 GF went for 32 or 33 minutes and the tension was unbelievable.

Kind of a side issue, but not true- Sydney could have won it either with a mark on the end of the kick into their forward line, or (thank you god for not doing this) an infringement plucked out of that last throw in ruck contest.

As with most people in this thread, prefer count up, not especially fussed though.

The game which always sticks in my head is the 2005 QF between West Coast and Sydney- less than a goal in it, and the clock went past 34:00 before the final siren sounded- crowd was just beside themselves by the time the siren went.

+1 for absolutely loving the countup clock. As I go to the footy most weeks I'm used to it, and love it at the ground not knowing how much time is left.

I could imagine for the casual footy watcher (aka the TV fans) it'd be annoying.

The best system is the basketball style countdown clock.

The worst system is soccer's referee wristwatch.

Loved how Richo said how good it was with the clock not counting down and BT just chimed in with 'but here at 7 we love the countdown clock'

Richo then agreed that countdown clock was better... :)

Can't see the fuss that BT was worried about.

You can actually work out for yourself how much time on happens in a game.

A goal usually consumes up of 30 seconds of added time, allowing for the ball to be brought back into the middle..and the tv crews being ready with that blasted flashing light before the centre bounce happens. Stoppages you add about 5-10 seconds at a time.

Saldy, stretcher cases are the hardest to control. The aftermath of what happened to dempsey last night was the 3rd quarter on it's own, was well over 38 minutes in length. At a guess, 10 minutes of time added on came from the stretcher case.

It's just one of those things in life that we can now change due to technology but the people like holding on to old traditions. It's like finding out the sex of a baby, wasn't an option 50 years ago but now it is and people still wait for the surprise. I like countdown on TV, time clock at the ground.

Thought this thread would be about Malthouse's premiership clock!
Like others have said already, I prefer the countdown clock on tv but prefer the countup clock at games
Agree that in this day and age, there should be an option for both

I like it counting up not counting down, makes things more desperate as a viewer and it kind of exacerbates my happiness or joy, which is awesome.

Gut wrenching if we lose, but looking back those games were kind of awesome too, because of the passion.
