Although I think Geelong would have still won today, I think that the Coburg selectors got it wrong by dropping Hughes. Yes - he had a bad week last week but I think he has a good pair of hands and would have straightened the Tigers up today.

Coming off the half back line the runners didn't have a target - Schulz plays better out of the square and Riewoldt can play the foil out of the pockets. I think Bowden plays a better game further up the ground, much like his brother's game in the seniors.

I'm not an expert but it looked as though the side lacked structure today.

I watched the game yesterday and was also very confused with the omission of hughes, surely you have to give the younger players every opportunity to bounce back from a bad game the week before, and in saying that he came out and kicked 5 in the reserve grand final

It all sounds good in theory but Hughes didn't get that job done in the reserves. What makes you think he was going to do it in the seniors?

How the heck does a potential Richmond AFL Senior player get dropped to the Coburg Reserves? wtf?
Thank God for Hughes that wasn't Round 21 and there was a Coburg 3rds.

I think Geelong has always had its independant 2nd side, and therefore i'm not sure where someone who was playing poorly in this grade would go if not being played.

However, this season Geelong has had very few injuries also, so that would strengthen the 2nds team also. I am surprised though when i hear of a player being dropped effectively 2 grades back, as Hughes kicked 3 against the Cast earlier this season, and i really wonder what would being dropped to the Coburg reserves actually do for his development?

It just seems a retrograde step, if Coburg's charter is to develop players and game styles (Like Geelong's game plan is exactly the same as the seniors) why not endeavor to develop the senior guys more? They are the ones to try and get game time and confidence into, not any 25-26 y/o journeymen who are never-wases in senior AFL terms, and are therefore not in Richmond's best interests. Just as an outside, it must be alarming for these fairly high picks like Oakley-Nichols, Hughes and Meyer to be not developing as one would be hoping.

Not saying Geelong's picks of 2004-5 were that much better, as aside from M.Egan (2004-62), Stokes (61-2005) and of course Selwood (7-2006), few others from those recent drafts have cracked it for senior footy.

West, Owen, Gamble, Djerrkura, have yet to play, and Prismall and Varcoe have only played a few games so far. Most of the early names might have
a task to press for selection unless injuries hit, and Prismall would be a great talent if he could be squeezed in. Varcoe for a pick 15 has shown glimpses, but has work to do to maintain a senior spot.

Take heart though Tigers, as the core of Geelong's side are players drafted from 1999 onwards, with only Milburn, Scarlett, King and Harley being from previous years. In maybe 2-3 years, those names of the Tigers drafts of 2004 onwards might be the core of their side then, and this might mean a group as a whole can lift the club up together, like the way the class of 1999 and 2001 are doing currently at Geelong. I hope they can, the Tigers need to reward their loyal fans!!:thumbsu:

He was awful in the ressies. Just ran around the outside of packs, sat in the goal square without moving, and dropped his head everytime something went wrong.
A centre half forward should be like Richo. Leading up the wings, making an option. Hughes on the other hand would jog back to the goal square if he saw the ball coming down the wing.
He has got alot of work to do over the preseason.
JON is just as bad and was lucky to be in the team IMO. In the 3rd qtr he had the ball on the wing, tigers everwhere and what does he do? A little sideways chip that Varcoe cuts off and runs down for a 50m entry.

Typical stupid tigers giving out 3 and 5 year contracts willy nilly.

you would think we would learn from previous mistakes.but how can we give a bloke who has shown absoulutely nothing three years.suppose there is a reason why we have been down the bottom for so long
