Watson's issue is he is a top-order batsman, but probably not good enough to play that role.

Remember that rare streak of form a few seasons back, but couldn't convert to big scores... Reinforces this for mine. (Shows up in those stats HJ)

Back in the day before keepers became the all rounder, he'd have been the perfect no.7 because his bowling is a notch above average.

And the Mitch Johnson wankfest begins.

He just flogged half of a mediocre team. Watch him bowl pies in England.

Interesting how his batting form reflects his bowling. Always has.

Just pray that the selectors don't start rating him above Pattinson & Siddle.

I thought Bird showed plenty. Bowled a good length, moved the ball and made the batsmen play. Compare that to Johnson on most days......

They will. He's an "all rounder" you see.

Bird's display was the most impressive by a young fast bowler I have seen. I don't even care how many wickets he got, the spots he bowled and the way he went about it... WOW

Indeed. When lung cancer gets hold of you it often takes you swiftly.

I did a job with Tony a few years back. Was an interesting guy. And yes, certainly hacked away on the gaspers.

The new plain packaging laws will be very effective me thinks. Neutering the brand is about the worst thing that can happen to a product from a business point of view.

Yet a heart attack apparently got him now - the twin disease giants of the Western world.

Hussey has announced his retirement after the Sydney Test. Not sure anyone saw that coming!

Certainly leaves a hole in our batting lineup, does Special K become a permanent fixture now??

Also RIP Tony Greig, great commentator

So Greig played 58 tests for England. Really didn't think it was that many. Also didn't realise his dad was Scottish, which is what enabled him to play for England.

Sad day. RIP

You remember that kid at school whose dad ran the VFL club? You remember how he had a bunch of Dennis Lillee aluminum bats? He also had - or as I should say - his dad had one of Greigy's old SP bats. Brought it to school one day.

A hole so big you could steer the QEII through it just appeared in the batting order. heck.

I do remember the DK bat. Made one hell of a sound. I think he had some SP pancake gloves too.

Good on him. Had a fantastic summer after some questions being asked leading in. Would love to see him notch up a farewell ton.

Going to leave a big hole. Hopefully someone grasps the opportunity.

He did.

Bought my son his first real bat for Xmas. Loved doing that - tried to get him the lightest bat I could. Had a wonderful time in the indoor nets trying the range out. Glad to see they all require oil these days too.

I was tossing up between a Gray Nick and a Kookaburra. Both bats were great, but the Kookaburra had a shorter handle (the GN's handle was like extraordinarily long) and thought it would be less to think about, if you know what I mean. Been batting with it a bit, albeit being a few sizes too small, and it's a nice bit of willow.

Would have liked to see Maxwell get a gig ahead of one of the pace bowlers. Even though this is a test match and I don't want to give away spots, if he is going to play in India I'd prefer him to be blooded here for a soft kill of a wounded opposition instead of being thrown in the deep end (although that didn't hurt Clarke!).
