Just under 3 weeks until the first test & the team is in serious need of some first class practice matches.

Absurdly, our batting lineup is going to be dependant on Rogers & Cowan, the only two who have had any first class form in the last month.

This may get very ugly.

Australia A is collapsing like a wet paper bag 'bout now.

Good to see Maddison make some runs. Concerning about the second innings however

Yes, he went berserk, no doubt. Pretty crappy side they're playing though.

Very true. Twas back to back hundreds for him also I believe.

The only way we will do damage if some of our batsman stand up, or clarke makes 600 odd runs for the series (if he stays fit). Unfortunately we just dont have much batting talent in the country right now

The other problem with our bats is that given they will get rolled in around 50-60 over per innings, it will barely give enough time for the quicks to put their feet up. Will be the exact opposite with the Poms.

Lucky for us, our bowling depth is quite deep so Id expect us to rotate quite a few thru the sides.

It certainly says something when almost the key to our batting is a 35 year old with one test to his name.

I'd take Smith ahead of Warner. Actually one of the few batsman to put a price on his wicket in India. Actually looks like he gives a shit.

The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel (NSP) has today advised that Steve Smith has been added to the Australian Ashes squad on the VB Tour of England.

Commenting on the decision, National Selector John Inverarity said: “The NSP advises that Steve Smith has been added to the Australian Ashes squad until the beginning of the Second Test when it will be reviewed. Given David Warner is unavailable for the upcoming tour games against Somerset and Worcestershire and while Michael Clarke continues to make good progress from a back injury, we feel further batting cover is required.
“Ashton Agar is to accompany the Ashes Squad until the beginning of the Second Test as a development player. This will be similar to the situation when Mitchell Starc accompanied the ODI, T20 and Test Squads on the tour to West Indies in 2012 as a development player.
“Fawad Ahmed will return to Australia tomorrow (Monday) while he goes through the processes required of him to become an Australian citizen and remains a player of interest to the National Selection Panel.”

Lehmann is the right choice. Should have been made some time ago.

He has a wealth of experience playing for Yorkshire, is a good communicator, popular & not afraid to lay down the law.

We may have hope yet.

Not to mention he can bat. Captain/coach, No.3?

Think your on the money. I think if Boof is coach, it will give the playing group fantastic believe.

A happy worker is a productive worker.

I also heard on the news tonight that Clarke has stepped down as a selector which is another good move imo.

It took them long enough to work out Arthurs didn;'t have a freaking clue. I applaud the decision, but question the timing of it. He should have gone many many many months ago. Now to get rid of Inverarity.
Adelaide Hawk, were you playing grade cricket at the time Inverarity was playing for SA?

I remember one ex-player saying how he influenced training etc, but found him (funnily enough, given his vocation) very "school master" in his approach.

Don't get me wrong, I have no personal axe to grind for Invers. An astute man, talented captain, above average cricketer and, as you say, did have a huge influence on SA cricket in his time here. He was an enormous help to Tim May in turning him into a Test off-spinner. Admittedly he was only pointing out what others had tried to tell him (getting his arm higher in delivery), but it still helped.

I just don't think Invers has done a very good job with selection and at times, his pig headed approach hasn't helped. Boof Lehmann in charge will be like a breath of fresh air to Australian cricket. God only knows what Arthurs and his cohorts were trying to achieve. They were 100% correct with one thing .... they kept telling us we didn't understand what they were doing.

And the rotation policy gets the ass too!

"Looking ahead to the Ashes series that we will see in England and next summer in Australia you won't see any of that rotation policy in the fashion that we have in the past," Southerland told ABC Radio on Tuesday.
"It (rotation) is about providing opportunity for players in a team that's in transition so that selectors can give players an opportunity at international level to see how they cope with that and to respond.

And if we can bump Pat Howard, that would be a plus too.

Good decision, odd timing, but it's a great step in the right direction. Clarke gone as a selector is even better.

Finally, after all the crap, we are seeing some good decisions being made

reckon this series is going to be more competitive than people think.

Sure, India series was a total disaster, but England won't have doctored, turning wickets. People are forgetting how good we were against both South Africa and Sri Lanka start of the year -- both quality teams. Agree totally with Arthur we have the best pace attack (who never were going to have any real impact on those wickets in India), and will challenge the Poms. Top order has been inconsistent, sure, but seen enough over the past 3 series that it can still all come together.

What a bloody circus.

What a bloody circus.
There are a lot of circuses going around at the moment . . .

Faulkner named at 7 for the first tour match. If he can match his FC record of 22.34 wit the ball and 29 with the bat he will be our best bowler and second best batsman ;)

Anyone know what the fascination is with Ryan Harris? They are resting him from the first tour match to get him ready for the Ashes . . . With Siddle, Lyon and Pattinson taking up the first three bowling spots, you have to figure Harris is fighting it out with Starc, Bird and maybe Faulkner. I can't see him clearly ahead of any of them and given his fitness issues I would want to know he can make it through a couple of games without getting injured before I gave him a spot in the ashes.

How about Vlad and Hird to open the batting?
