Ah, that was nice. Australia had everything to play for today and England had everything to lose. Pressure was all on us.

Great to win the Ashes back. Fantastic turn-around.

Them seeds were sown in England.

Superb effort. A great demonstration of a side wanting to win v a side expecting to win.

Our boys, despite the scoreline, came away from England with the belief they could do this. They knew with a bit of luck (or less bad luck) that the result in England could have been different and applied themselves to a man to get the result here.

A great TEAM result with everyone making a contribution along the way.

So what do we think of Watson now? Was critical in that last test and another half century or century and his batting results are not too bad for the series...

Actually has 2 x 100s and 2 x 50s from his past 4 Tests (I think). Not to mention his bowling is a massive asset to the team. I've got no problem with him in the team at all.

His problem is that a lot of his dismissals are the same (LBW, nicking with hard drives) and that he doesn't convert enough starts into really big scores. Overall though he stills justifies his place and there's always that hope that one day it will really click and we'll get a few years of absolute sublime cricket from him. Of course, time for that is running out.

I wonder if we could manage him to get to No.6 whether we would see more of those destructive innings like the other day.

My feeling has always been that 6 might be a great position for him. I know he's played there for a little bit with modest results, but it makes sense to me moving forward.

My opinion hasn't changed. His ton in the last test was a 20/20 innings… and he's world class in that form of the game. Bowling has always been good when fit and his body seems to be holding up which is a bonus. He's not a test no.3 in my book (or test batsman for that matter). As was mentioned a few pages back, his upside at 3 is that he's getting a start which is more reliable than his current rivals for the position.

We've won the toss 3-0. - Massive advantage

We've been
6/132 - 1st Innings Bris
5/143 - 1st Innings Perth
Yet managed to work our way out of it (good luck or just a deep batting lineup?) Our second innings have always been a stress free approach as we bowled the poms out cheaply. However they've dug-in in the 4th innings in Adelaide and then Perth, so can they actually apply some scoreboard pressure?

I think we're due a bad game with the ball, and losing a toss could swing the ball back over there way. Good thing is we've secured the ashes, and nothing can change that from here on it, but some of the media sensationalism is just plain ridiculous.

If we don't address our weaknesses then we're really just wall papering over the cracks.

I was a big fan of Rogers, but he looks shot.
Watson... Is it really the making of him as reported.... I doubt it, but deserves more time.
Bailey doesn't look free mentally to play test cricket, and has only thrived when being allowed to use the long end of the bat with aggression.
Smith, I'm happy to persist with.

So with that all said and done, I'd like us to use the 2 remaining test matches to bring in some younger players in the positions Bailey and Rogers are taking up.

Happy for Hughes to take up Rogers' spot at the top. He's in form. Deserves to be backed in until someone else steps up.
Doolan, Head, Dunk, even Cooper.

White and North are probably too old?

Yeah, I agree with you. I'd like to see Hughes back too. Time to start planning for the future a little.

Nah, North and White are gone. For all of White's sudden form, he's far too limited a batsman at test level for mine.

Something from a media mate of mine - cricket's his sport/work.

Says if he keeps developing and Haddin stays at it for another year or two, then he reckons Sam Whiteman from WA will be our next keeper.

Says he's a real talent and the selectors have him firmly in their sights.

On that, I thought Marsh's comments on Haddin and Lyon in today's Age were interesting. The inference was that Wade was lacking.

So it appears Swann has quit the English team/retired effective immediately
3 games of bad losses after being leading wicket taker in the series and he pulls up stumps...what is going on in that squad to make it such a terrible place to be?

An enormous lack of confidence in their own abilities, it would seem.

Watched Lynn singlehandedly win a t20 match for the heat last night. Has an incredible eye but scored 80+ almost without playing a cricket shot.

Stuart Law described it as 'see ball, hit ball'. Those two flat batted 6's over long off were baseball swings.

Granny Swann, nasty bastards.

Graeme Swann's grandmother has blamed unwelcoming Australians for the spinner's sudden retirement and said something "nasty" must have happened to convince the England star to turn his back on the Ashes.
Swann quit cricket after the third Test defeat as Australia reclaimed the Ashes, ending an international career which had yielded 255 wickets for the off-spinner.

"There is something gone wrong there and I blame the Australian players. Not all the Australian players, a certain one," Mina Swann, 89, told The Journal newspaper in Newcastle, England.

"I do not think they have been [made] very welcome, the team. He is not easily upset, there is something nasty happened."

One of Australian cricket's most colourful characters, Kerry O'Keeffe, has called stumps on his commentary career.

O'Keeffe has announced that the Sydney New Year's Ashes Test will be his last in the ABC Grandstand commentary box after 13 summers of entertaining Australian radio audiences.

O'Keeffe has been a popular member of the ABC commentary team, with audiences enjoying not only his expertise, but his amusing take on the game.

His distinctive laugh has been a signature sound over summer and he has provided some of cricket's most memorable commentary.

Two of the most memorable broadcast moments include Kerry's "Frog in a Bank" joke and the Naga chilli eating challenge with guest commentator Harsha Bhogle.

Sad to see (hear) Skull retiring. A great character who really added to the whole experience.

How about that batting line up again? Watson same old. Bailey looked all at sea.
