I think we would all agree that realistically teams have a window of about three or fours years maximum when they are contenders for a flag and then at least that for the best of them where they have no chance ...
This is flawed IMO and needs to be changed ... Each year we see at best one or two great teams and if we're lucky maybe one more fight it out ... Often like last year the best team has no real rival ...
If we had a system that allowed the clubs who are managed extremely well and have the right culture to not have down periods we might see a current Geelong outfit against a Lions of 2001 and maybe even a Bombers of 2000 all in the same year ... Sure not every year but it would happen in the good years and the poorest years would likely still show two worthy contenders ...
I can't see how a system that gives teams no chance for long periods because of the size of lists and the draft is good for the game ... The only advantage you could argue is that it encourages a rotation system up the top for all but the joke clubs like Richmond ...
