The Fixture

I know it's convoluted this year, but surely the Premiers should get the toughest fixture? How the hell is the below possible in the condensed fixture? Not to mention us needing to hub in two different states.

Richmond plus 4 days against Freo.
Richmond plus 1 day against WCE
Essendon plus 1 day against Richmond
Richmond plus 4 days against Gold Coast
Port plus 1 day against Richmond
Richmond plus 2 days against Brisbane
WB plus 1 day against Richmond
GWS and Richmond same break

As opposed to us.

Pies plus 1 day break against Freo
Sydney plus 1 day break against Pies
Adelaide plus 1 day break against Pies
Melbourne plus 2 days against Pies
North and Pies same break
Carlton plus 3 day break against Pies
Brisbane plus 7 day break against Pies.

The commentators last night were all gushing about HOW much the Tiggies enjoy their work and their time in the hubs.
I guess we know why now ;)

Lopsided draw, soft hubbing with their families up in QLD, few (if any) season ending injuries and of course the ability to hit oppo players and get off scott free....WHO WOULDN'T BE LAUGHING

(Maybe the guys with the fingers up their bottoms in the change rooms?)

Yes they are always grinning & laughing because they are sooooooooooooo good they can get away with. I reckon in my many decades of watching footy, I haven't despised a team than this bogan mob, in particular Reiwoldt, Cotchin, Martin, Grimes and the rest of the team........
They're up there with St Kilda (Milne, Baker) for my mind

The thing that really gets me is the home state disadvantage we've copped this year. We've played (or will play):

-- Adelaide in SA
-- GWS in NSW
-- West Coast in WA
-- Fremantle in WA
-- Brisbane in QLD
-- Gold Coast in QLD

...any guesses where they'll make us play Port Adelaide in round 18?

The only time we've played an interstate team in a neutral state is Sydney, who we played in Queensland. One neutral game from eight possibilities. Impressively biased.

Meanwhile, the soft-as-butter Tiggies have played:

-- West Coast in QLD
-- Sydney in QLD
-- Freo in QLD
-- Adelaide in QLD
-- Gold Coast in QLD (at the Gabba, Suns away game)
-- and Brisbane in QLD (at Metricon, Lions away game)

The only time they've left the hub the entire year has been for TWO away games against GWS and Port. They got smashed in both. As opposed to our SEVEN.

...and even both their games against Queensland teams have been played at neutral venues! We, meanwhile, cop the Lions at the Gabba.

...and yet Cotchin is still such a little bitch that he wants to sook out and abandon the footy club which he's supposed to be a leader of.

...and for ALL THAT ADVANTAGE they're one game clear of us.

So tired of reading footballers are finding the hubs tough. What a joke

West coast get it real good. Play 7 games @ Optus with packed crowds and only play at 2 other grounds for their away games (Metricon, Gabba). Also north who aren’t any good will end up not going to Perth or adelaide and played Brisbane at Metricon. Meanwhile we have to play at the G, Marvel, Spotless, Adelaide Oval, Optus, Gabba and maybe Metricon. We’ve been shafted with breaks as well but atleast we’ve got a run of games at the GF venue

Collingwood will attempt to defy one of the most physically demanding runs any team has faced this season when it tries to upset Brisbane Lions on Friday night.
In a little-known quirk of the AFL’s compressed fixture, the Magpies will face a fresher opponent for the fifth time in six games when they take on the Lions at the Gabba.

It is a huge contest for Nathan Buckley’s men who trail fifth-placed West Coast by six points on the ladder, and need to win to keep their top-four hopes alive.

Young ruckman Max Lynch, 21, will debut after being taking with pick No. 51 in the 2016 rookie draft.

Brisbane has had the chance to rejuvenate off a 12-day break, while the Magpies have had five days between games as they come to the end of another taxing streak.

Since Collingwood’s Round 10 win over the Swans, the club has had less days rest than each of its opponents – except for the Round 13 win over North Melbourne when the Pies and Roos each had a nine-day break to help recharge.

In its five other games in that span, Collingwood’s opponent had the fresher legs including Melbourne (two days extra break), Carlton (three) and the Lions (seven).

Collingwood's Gruelling stretch:

Round 15: Friday, September 4 v Brisbane Lions, Gabba

Round 14: Sunday, August 30 v Carlton, Gabba

Round 13: Monday, August 24 v North Melbourne, Gabba

Round 12: Saturday, August 15 v Melbourne, Gabba

Round 11: Tuesday, August 11 v Adelaide, Adelaide Oval

Round 10: Thursday, August 6 v Sydney, Gabba

It is contrast to reigning premier Richmond which has enjoyed a longer rest than its opponent in the lead-up to four of its past six games.

In total, Collingwood has had 14 days less lead-in rest than its opponents in that six-game span, while the Tigers have enjoyed seven more rest days.

It is a huge challenge for the Magpies as the club attempts to preserve its legs for game day as well as make the necessary tactical tweaks to the forward connection issues which have hampered it this year.

Collingwood’s demanding run comes on top of a tough period between Rounds 9 -11 when the Magpies played four games in 14 days, and lost star players Adam Treloar, Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe to injury. Chris Mayne is also out for three to four weeks with a fractured cheekbone.

But Collingwood coach Buckley believes the Magpies have emerged from that period and a recent game plan tune-up match “hardened” and in “great shape”.

“The rut didn’t last for one month,” Buckley said.

“There is always external opinion of what the on-field product looks like, and there is no doubt the physical demands of that compressed period for us were quite extreme.

“There are other sides going through it at the moment, but as I said at the time I didn’t think the analysis of the performance was that nuanced from the outside.

“But the reality is we have faced that.

“And anytime you go through tough periods it builds resilience if you are prepared to see it as a learning opportunity and a growth opportunity.

“I think we are better for it.”

The clash against the Lions is the final hurdle in the run as the Magpies then have the bye to freshen up for their last two games of the season against Gold Coast and Port Adelaide.

De Goey is a chance to return for the Round 18 clash against the Power, while Howe (knee) and Treloar (hamstring) can be part of the Magpies’ finals tilt.

Buckley said Howe was “pushing really hard” to be fit in time for finals.

“He knows it is a race against the clock, so where we are as a team is going to impact on the probability of him being able to get back,” Buckley said.

“He’s looking after his side of things and we will attempt to look after ours.”

Anyone shocked?

Where did West Coast play there 1st 4 or 5 games?

In all fairness some of the turn around's and travel yes I agree have been strange and harsh to (some clubs)
But I am not sure how the AFL could have done better considering the Covid-19

Personally I am surprised we have some kind of footy this year.

You give the hardest fixture to the team that won the flag. That isn't even close to having happened this year. If anything Richmond have had one of the easiest fixtures after winning a flag and up until today there was zero in the media about it.

Look I agree with you 100%
But keep in mind the fixture was changed and done on the run due to circumstances,
We had to wait week after week for the next games to be announced as in who traveled where etc.
In a normal season the fixture is announced prior to a season commencing.

Anyone shocked?
No,I’m not shocked. But that article lays it out pretty starkly that we have been stiffed by the A.F.L regarding the draw this year, and Richmond has been absolutely blessed. The question that has to be asked is,why does this keep happening?Remember last year when Richmond had their last 12 games at the M.C.G and didn’t have to travel interstate in the second half of the season?Imagine the outcry from everyone in the football world if we’d had a draw like that?

Anyone shocked?

Shocked? Nup....I attempted to research all this a few weeks ago till it became obvious how screwed we were by the format.
I'm really at a loss to explain just how "one sided" this whole thing has become but Bucks saying "There's other teams going through it at the moment"....yeah/nah. They don't have the "outs" we did and they don't have the chance at finals.

It is what it is, but whomever orchestrated this fixturing really has a sadistic streak
