The Gap is Closing On Federer

Indeed. Head to head can be very misleading. We saw Nadal struggle and totally c capitulate today against Fed and it is only the fact that they have played so often on clay which gives him his head to head lead.

Equally the fact that Nalbandian has yetto show it against topplayers at Slam semi and final level leaves questions against his head to head record.

yes, like wimbledon finals he really capitulated :thumbsdown: .Did nadal refuse you or something? your obession is quite amazing, oh hey, he beat nole but then nole was tired, not so interested and error prone, so i guess that doesnt count eh??

Interesting. And Nalbandian is 2-zip against Nadal, both this year, on hard. But Head to Heads mean nothing unless it can be replicated in Grand Slams. Hasnt beaten quality opposition (no, I dont count an inconsistent Monfils at the French quality) at a Slam in a while.
He had a shit year at the Grand Slams, his worst since 2001 perhaps. I just believe that if he can take his new serve into next year, and there's no reason why he shouldn't, he will tear shit up.

*pure speculation and hearsay ahead*

If he had had Jaite as his coach at start of 06, he may very well have reached #1 winning AO (ahead in SF) and FO (ahead in SF) and the TMC 05 the year before. Federer himself has said "Nalbandian should have been #1 in 2006", I can find the article for you if you like. I just really hope that next year will be the year he finally achieves what a tennis player of his ilk should.

Well TP you have to say that Geddy's prediction was closer to the mark than your own.

Fed did indeed reach the semis and then dispatched the one dimensional Spanish clay courters with minimum bother and without looking like losing a set. Geddy 100% correct.

still was better than your nole prediction

If Federer feels like it he will win! The only thing that will stop him is boredom!

True on all surfaces except clay where only Rafa can hope to beat him regularly. Look at the 4 slams plus the Masters Cup. The top 5 events of the year. Finalist in all of them and winner in 4 and that in a poor year by his standards. He was one match away from sweeping the top 5 events.

What a ridiculous statement. Sampras never had a year like Federer's 2007.

Any player who wins 3 out of 4 majors is still pretty comfortably out in front.

You can talk about "the gap closing", but he still won every Grand Slam except the French.

And it took the best clay courter in history to beat him in the French... otherwise we'd likely be looking at consecutive grand slams.

If Federer's even close to losing his #1 ranking then the rankings are absolute rubbish.

why is that? federer is only 650 points ahead of Rafa now, which is more or less like a masters series victory.Remember roger has heaps of clay points to defend where he won the tournament beating Nadal last year? well he aint beating Rafa on clay..so he better be win other tournaments to make up

I don't think the gap is closing as much as people think. Sure all young players are improving (especially Novak), they're bound to have super victories from time to time.

But 'The Fed' is allowed to lose once in awhile aswell, I think the weight of expectation weighs him down more than anything else. Perhaps other things are rather telling at this point, not having a proper coach since Tony Roache (granted he doesn't essentially need one as he is brilliant on his own), his illness prior to the open, not getting a proper practice run prior to the open etc.

He'll bounce back, wouldn't be surprised if he won the next few grand slams (even finally toppling Rafa and winning the French).

True enough. That said his form is nowhere near what it was and he is more vulnerable than he has been since 2002. However he is still streets ahead of the pack....; Djokovic, by far the most likely next No1 is still too inconsistent, Murray has the talent but has he the ability to stay injury free and of course Nadal hasn't the ability to win with any consistency off the clay as we discovered again today when nalbandian nilled him. How many non clay tourneys has he won in the past 2 years? one or Two? Nowhere near the quality to be a consistent year round No.1.

Murray and Gasquet must be licking their lips.

ROFL...u should start your own blog.....comedy that is :D
