The Haka

Dudes,

Don't mean to cause an international rift here, and while I watch a bit of union, I don't follow league, but just caught a you tube vid of the haka before that Kangaroos v Kiwis from the other week (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=UuXmk4tVoSE&feature=bz303).

Just wondering if anyone else was thinking this particular ceremony was a little bit over the top?... Is the "war dance" an intimidation/psyche out or some sort of "welcome, we respect you" type thing?

If you turn your back, are you being rude?

If any of you guys are kiwi, I'd love to know, and again, I'm not trying to be insulting here, just would like to hear what others think.

Anyways, whatever the answer is to those questions, what I do love is this clip - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=-unicKS3sRA - when the kiwis that were playing for the Irish county side of Munster, came forward and did the haka to their own national squad, to which the crowd went absolutely bananas (to the extent that you couldn't hear a word from the guys).

There was a huge hissy fit by the media when England ignored the haka and gathered into a huddle, which I found a bit hypocritical given it's all pretty manufactured in the first place. I would've expected it to be "They can do it alright, but it doesn't mean we have to pay attention to them".

There have been worse things done than ingoring the haka. Like Campese back in the early 90's/ late 80's. I believe he ran to the back of the field and practised kicking for a bit I do believe

I think its awesome. Although the League boys seemed pretty woeful at it compared to the All-Blacks.

Even better when the All-Blacks and Tongans face off.
That really was awesome!...I work with a Samoan and Kiwi, and was mentioning above video, we all ended up doing the Haka, including the boss:D....It was great fun!

I don't know if it is true or not but I heard that it is against tradition for women to perform the haka. You might have upset the gods of the long white cloud, MacMum!

I heard the same. Apparently its fine for white men to do it, but maori women cannot.

According to wikipedia, women can do certain hakas but most are performed predominantly by men.

End NZ history lesson. Sweet as, bro.

You might be better off playing some Dave Dobbyn to get the Kiwi gods back on side.

I'm a big fan of the haka. And I thought Carlos Spencer was the best leader of the haka. He had a particularly confident aura about him.
