Decent trailer but probably won't see this.

When I re-watched the first two LOTR films on foxtel over the last couple of weeks...I was left rather disappointed. The second one in particular I found really flat.
Decent movies and all, but I think their current reputation will fade in years to come. Anyway, that's not all that relevant to The Hobbit.

I do like Martin Freeman though.

I love it how Bifur has an axe embedded in his skull.

I remember it as you still age with the ring, but a lot slower. Or else Gollum should've looked exactly the same too.

This has always been my understanding of it. The ring gives you long life, and ages you slowly.

In regards to the trailer, mega excited. Looks great, can't wait a year to see it :(

The dwarves have makeup on, no CGI.

Yeah, could be that in part though I don't think that fully explains what I saw. I guess there are so many dwarves that there has to be some differentiation from the "normal" dwarf look. Many to me looked like Disney versions of Gimli.

Maybe this is targeted more to a younger audience than the Ring cycle hence the more "toy story" feel of the clip.

Definitely think there is plenty of content for 2 movies... hard to see that in this trailer though. Likewise the trailer didn't blow me away (and may fail to draw people in), but it did enough to install confidence in PJs direction and casting.

The dwarves looked great... and this is their journey/quest and they seemed fun, jovial, but also serious about their goal. Bilbo is there to tag along (like a reporter covering the story), but it will change his life forever (derr).

After seeing this and some comments... it reminded me of just how much content there is in TH. (I seriously need to re-read it soon.)

Just in case the following are spoilers

- Gandalf & Dwarves in the Shire.
- Trolls
- Orcs in the cave
- Riddles in the Dark *** so looking forward to this scene, prob 30 mins right there.
- Forrest Spiders
- Beorn
- Eagles
- Wood elves and barrel down the river
- Lake Town
- Lonely Mountain
- Smaug
- Bard the archer, Smaug and lake town
- Battle of the 5 armies

*** then as others have said... if they include Dol Guldur material... well that could be simply awesome too.

There is certainly too much material there (14 core scenes for those who didn't read the spoiler) for a single movie. I think 2 movies that are about 2hours long would do it justice.

It did look a bit plastic to me as well, which goes to show that digital will always struggle to replicate the warmth of film. However I believe this trailer was conformed to standard broadcast framerates and is not shown as 48 fps as it was shot. So who knows how it will finally look in the theater. That's all part of the expectation too.

Making the Silmarillion would be flogging a dead horse, then that's what Hollywood is great at so expect it in theaters circa 2015.

You can't make a Silmarillion movie. They could select and expand upon particular tales. They would be epic if done right.

Any chance that they will make The Silmarillion? Must admit I struggled to read through the whole book, although did complete it.

I tried reading it once and stopped because it was too tough to stay interested in it.

Not that I am a heavy reader etc, but I have read TH and LotR a few times each.

I found The Silmarillion a bit similar to The Old Testament or The Illiad (forced my way through that one) in how tough it was to stay interested.

As for a movie... I'm sure if there are any descent storylines within the chapters someone will make it.

That's a pretty sweet poster. Looks fantastic.

Very shocked at the news that they're now thinking of making it into a trilogy. At first I thought two movies would be a bit of overkill, but eventually warmed to the idea. But three? I'm struggling to think of where they're going to get all the content from. At least it hasn't been decided yet, but I hope they stick to two.

My understanding is that it is not exactly turning The Hobbit into a trilogy, but rather adding another film based on other bits and pieces of material written by Tolkien, as sort of a bridging film between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings.

I am not sure how much I am going to enjoy these films. The trailer makes them look a lot like TLOTR films, whereas the book is actually very different - far more fairytale like, rather than an epic story. I'm a bit worried they're pumping up the battles and stuff to make it more Jackson-like.

Also, the ring is also coloured by the image of it from the first three films. In The Hobbit, beause TLOTR hadn't even been thought of yet, it's just a magic ring. There's not really any sinister corrupting properties to it, and Gollum is just an unpleasant creature with no backstory. Having it be this all-powerful sinister artifact completely changes the tenor of the story.

I sure hope you are right on this, because even 2 books will be overkill IMO and I'm tipping they will be pretty long movies as well.
I just hope they don't wreck a good thing.
