Haven't seen it yet, but I'm curious to know what people thought of the OST?

One of the main driving forces being LOTR in my opinion was its phenomenal soundtrack. I know Howard Shore has returned, but has he backed it up well?
Oh my word he has. The soundtrack is outstanding.

Went in not knowing how I would feel about it. I was pretty aghast that PJ decided to make it a 3 parter, and that this one was clocking in at almost three hours. At the end of the day though, there was enough there that I didn't feel cheated, and generally liked pretty much most of what on show. Lost a bit of interest at Rivendell, but that might of been because I kind of just needed a break.

Martin Freeman, take a bow son, great performance.

Also fwiw went with a group where 2 had already seen it, so rewatchability seems to be there.

Not sure what they'll do with the second movie

I imagine they'll reach the mountain and we'll get our first glimpse of Smaug. That should mean that we get:
The introduction of Beorn
Mirkwood and the Spiders
Elvenking
Barrell ride
Lake-town and meeting Bard
Reaching the mountain and finding the hidden door
Maybe Bilbo sneaking in to see Smaug

Plus, we know that they'll show Gandalf exploring Dol Guldur, where I imagine he'll discover the Necromancer and find Thrain.
To keep the sub plot going and set up the Battle of Five Armies there will probably be some more stuff with Azog, as well as introducing Bolg.

There's plenty there for a movie, whilst leaving enough for the third film,

Again, I just realised how much is crammed into this book. Many of the scenes will easily take up time on film, which is why I was annoyed with the extended beginning of TH:AUJ.

I really liked it - a couple of disappointing additions to the plot though I thought.

*spoilers* --> The addition of the 'white orc'; now, maybe I have a bad memory but that was never in the book - and the fact that he's now a main character was a bit disappointing... I don't see that it really adds much to the movie. The whole Rivendell saga with Saruman, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel was overkill - but I can see what they're trying to do. The Goblin part (Great Goblin and fight scenes) was done pretty poorly IMO, I know the Goblins weren't supposed to be completely evil and cunning - but they aren't supposed to bring comedic relief (as it seemed they were trying to do)... and the fight scene with the goblins made everything look way too easy, everything fell impossibly into place.... and Radaghast was basically a character from a Walt Disney production.

I thought the Shire, Gollum and Troll scenes were all excellent - as well as the start of the movie. I rated the acting pretty highly and I also thought the sound track was brilliant. <-- *end spoilers*

It's fair to say that there's much more action in store for the next two installments.

Correct, Azog was supposed to be dead at the time of The Hobbit. He was killed by Dain

Having Azog also helps set up Bolg for the Battle of Five Armies. In The Hobbit he just sort of shows up randomly at the end.

Arguably, you could have just gone with Bolg alone at the start as the antagonist (father slain by dwarves is as good enough motivation as any), but we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Saw it at a regular frame rate and in 2D but still had a blast. There were a few small gripes which have been covered in the thread but I don't think it was enough to detract from the whole experience.

Also inspired me to go over the LOTR trilogy again and I watched FOTR last night. As I've never read any of the books there were a few nice touches and nods to 'The Hobbit' which I didn't appreciate when I first watched the movies, like Bilbo telling the story about the trolls or when they find them turned to stone in the forest.

Same here, i recently watched FOTR and started to pick up on more things that i never did when i watched it before the Hobbit.

Sorry, but why did half the characters (especially the dwarves) look like CGI cartoon characters? Won't be watching this. I demand no CGI for the major quest members. Jackson is turning into Lucas.

Also hated the really fake CGI scene of a dwarf falling over on the floor, oh hahaha. Umm, no Peter, that's bullsh*t. Thought I was watching a Disney production.

What I liked. Seeing old Bilbo again. Young Bilbo looked the part too.

Film will be a critical failure IMO. Think Star Wars prequel.

I first read the hobbit and then Lotr when I was 12 and I love the books and the movie

His choices had nothing to do with pissing people off its simple maths

Make one kids movie of the hobbit and make a few hundred million or make another trilogy and make a few billion

Also, and I'm not familiar with his works (never read any of them), but one would think this is last Tolkien film adaption for at least a good few decades. So those making the films probably had the attitude of "We'll those other things he wrote won't get touched on their own so we may as well add them to this".

When is it released on Blu-ray? I want to download a free copy...

Saw it in 2d after not being all that impressed by the 3d of Life of Pi film. Surprised I liked it as much as I did. I guess you shouldn't read the criticisms before going into a film. I thought the direction itself was excellent. My only criticism being the Shire scenes went a bit too long. Compared with the LOTR films it felt a bit lite. Having said that the almost 3 hours I was in the cinema went as quick as when I saw The Dark Knight Rises. I guess that had longer previews! The dwarf leader was particularly well cast. A strong enough character and performance you can really pull for.

Finally saw it, enjoyed it. Agree with some that it seemed like it was trying too hard at times and there were those far-fetched moments like getting away from the goblins without losing anyone.

But all in all I liked it. Freeman was just the perfect hobbit, brilliant as Bilbo.

The 3D was ok, but looked miles better in the preview for Great Gatsby, that'd be a must-see in 3D imo.

7-7.5/10
