Surprised I haven't seen a thread on this, I may just be blind, feel free to delete if so.

West Coast has been given access to

West Coast
Metropolitan – East Perth, Perth, Swan Districts, Subiaco
Regional – South West (90 per cent), Midlands, Great Southern, Goldfields
* The Eagles will also have access to indigenous players in the Pilbara region

while Fremantle have been given access to

Fremantle
Metropolitan – East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Peel Thunder, West Perth, Claremont
Regional – Midwest, South West (10 per cent), Wheatbelt
* The Dockers will also have access to players from the Kimberley region

Thought this would be a good place to discuss potential future draftees and their performances leading up to the draft.

Anybody know of any stars in the making for either side?

Looks like a bum deal for West Coast I reckon. Kimberley is better than Pilbara, how did Fremantle get West Perth, that defies logic, the northern most metro side. Swans is a good get for indigenous and subi for the African population (Balga and Nollamara)

Is their going to be a similar program for non-indigenous players or does that already exist?

If you are in Sydney and Queensland yes, the rest of the country not so much.

Yeah I just realised that, thanks :)

"While boys and girls from all backgrounds will participate in the academies, clubs will only receive draft concessions for players who are under-represented in the AFL."

Even if they are terrible? What happened to being drafted based on merit not the colour of your skin?

Seems like a statement to be made in 20 years tbh.

I'll back us in to work with the clubs up there and develop the youngsters better than Freo ever would/will.

Well yeah we will only draft them if they have talent, we aren't going to draft them just for the sake of it. We do have the option to pass on academy players if we choose.

It's an encouragement to put more work into players from a minority background. White private school kids can go to our academy but we can't draft them with the preferential father-son/academy system where we get to match another clubs bid.

The clubs and the AFL should be putting the same amount of work into all kids regardless of their background, race or ethnicity.

Sounds like the players have to be in the academy for three years before the Eagles or Dockers can have bidding rights on the player.

Personally i think 90 % of the south west region plus having the Pilbara region and SD and Midland region is pretty good plus Albany great southern region is not too bad.... the Krakouer brothers come to mind.

Kids from all the way up north clearly need more assistance to make it compared to, say, a kid with a wealthy family attending private school.

I agree. More facilities and representation will help that. There are also plenty of poor Non Asian/African/Indigenous kids who also want to play sport but I guess they don't fit into the AFLs racial profile so they just have to suck it up.

It makes sense that West Coast gets the Pilbara as that is where the money isthey have been focusing on with their kicking goals program.

Personally I think it's a shame Freo gets the midwest region as there has been a strong history of good players coming from the area.

It's a win in terms of access to development for promising young kids in Western Australia (unless you're a non-aboriginal kid in the Pilbara region)

EDIT: Updated after re-reading the OP article

I didn't hate Freo when they first formed. My dislike for them is something that's fermented like a fine wine over the last 20 years..

Agreed. I always found it hard to hate something i pitied.

I no longer suffer from this however

After 2017 is a great season to bring it in. Well timed to troll Fremantle with the 2016 draft top 5 pick Sam Petrevski - Seton who is in that Freo zone :D

When Freo was first formed it consisted primarily of Claremont players if I remember correctly.

.... and about 75% of Claremont supporters I know who had previously supported WCE jumped ship and followed Neesham to the Lavenders.

considering our success rate of drafting quality indigenous talent in the last few years haven't been that great, this is actually pretty good.

Freo gets Claremont? Might have to find a new WAFL team to support. :p

Don't stress its only Claremont's metropolitan zone and I can give you the tip not many indigenous kids reside in the region.
