If you listen to only one band in 2011, let it be Welsh trio The Joy Formidable.
Not sure if/when their debut album The Big Roar will be released in Australia (January 24th in the UK, February 21st in Europe, March 15th in the USA), or if Triple J will even pick them up for some airplay, but the album is available for download now, so get it ASAP! Great thought-provoking lyrics behind an epic "wall of sound" make for a wonderful debut. I haven't been this excited about a band, nay, anything for years (inb4yourlifeisaverage).
Before the armchair critics and traditionalists on this board get the knives out, I'm not claiming it's the most original thing out there, nor that it's the greatest thing ever, just that they're an exciting young band that sounds great and should by the quality of their music have a massive future. The NME review of their album sums it up best: "...at a time when Arcade Fire, a band who by their own admission have “never had a hit record”, can sell out arenas on pure levels of heart and guts alone, then surely The Joy Formidable have everything to aim for."
Here's a few tracks from The Big Roar, the opener "The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie" (bit of a slow starter, but worth the wait) and standout tracks "I Don't Want to See You Like This" and "The Greatest Light Is the Greatest Shade", arguably their definitive track, "Whirring":

EDIT: Replaced the shortened (by five whole minutes!) "Whirring" video with a great, full "live in the studio" version, as well as adding a "live in the studio" version of "The Greatest Light..." (6/2/11).
