The key stats

There is no denying that our resilience under pressure and efforts around the ball was very Lyon-esque. Whether we could have done that without him, I don't really care. All I care about is he has us playing a decent brand of footy, so there is definitely a lot to like about the side under Lyon, as per the OP.

Clay always calls on fulltime stats to vindicate his monotonous arguments, what are you talking about? :p

Look, at the end of the day, take heart in the fact that when you put the specific numbers of the stats aside - they bode well for us in that we were able to match them over 4 quarters.

Personally, I was quite surprised to read the discrepancy in DE%. Not half bad for us to be up around 73%.

Absolutely agreed, Alfonz. But then, with our running team I never felt that we'd be in danger of playing the stereotypical "Ross Lyon Saints footy".

The disposal efficiency stat confuses me. Watching the game live it seemed that Geelong were so classy with their kicking and seemed to hit most of their targets.

Sometimes disposal efficency can be a false economy. A chip kick in the back half, kick in space,a kick into the forward 50, possession in the forward 50 and at clearances are very different.

Indeed. I was highly critical of how we played last year - even when we won, we were smashed in clearances, possession and contested possession. We played seagull footy. That's changed.

But no, the reason Freo won is because of freak goals.

Don't underestimate the chip kick in the back half, ask Mayne how hard it is!

The stats are not so impressive on their own - I mean 1 additional clearance - big deal.

However - who the stats were earned against is very impressive.

Can't understand why the acid is being put on Clay when he is on the money.

Less passengers than I can recall in a long time too

Yeah, one extra clearance isn't amazing. But people are forgetting how often we lost these stats in 2011.

Have to agree with Moo and Clay.

We shouldn't look at the stats from last night's game in isolation. The turn-around in stats from last year would have to be amazing.

Has anyone else also lost their voice after last night!

No, oh oracle of all things Freo, Senor Flay.

What I have done is point out that your "stats" [like all stats, be they DreamTeam, SuperCoach or Sheeeeeeet Clay Play Day No Way Say Hey Two Day) are open to interpretation.

If you are honest about your so called stats, you might possibly acknowledge that the massive 1 extra clearance we had, or the massive 18 extra contested possies "we had", are largely due to a combination of the umpiring (free kicks to Sandi and the Freo mids) and the net effect of the serial indiscipline of Geehandbags and lumps like Scarlett and Sjohnson.

Of course, to suit you - much better to give Rosscoe Pekoe all the credit, even when miracle goals from Pav and Fyfe are the only reason we won.

honestly mate, the best thing i have done since being on bigfooty is put that muppet on my ignore list..... saves reading a lot of rubbish posts.. i highly recommend :thumbsu:

Nope, absolutely not a Harvey "fan". Very glad he is gone, the way he played Hill, Palmer, Mundy and Sandi was just a disgrace.

My point to Sheeeeeeeeet Davis was that I find it very odd that for 16 years Clay has had no reason to post "the key stats" yet suddenly he feels the need to post (very, highly selective) so-called "stats" and suddenly they are evidence the "Lyon era" is "working". After 1 fu&king game, FFS...

Grow up Clay.
So basically its got nothing to do with Freo but because you don't like Clay?

Yes, last year was terrible but I don't think that was the intent, we had the same head coach the year before and we played a high pressure game. Last year was so off for so many reasons that I don't think it was the intention to play that way, players were covering for each other all over the ground. Patchwork, hard to be consistent from week to week with the personnel we had.

I think it's easy to be critical of last year but there are reasons for it that are out in the open.

Whoa!! that actually makes a bit of sense... to be fair to us though the cats got one or two assey/classy goals too.

We won by 4 points and if geelong had of nailed any of those set shots we would've lost by 1 yet the stats still would've been bassically the same. Would everyone still be praising all these stats then?

^Yes.

Because whether it was a 4 pt win or a 2 pt loss, we played outstandingly as a unit and the proof was in the pudding compared to our playing style of 2011. An honourable loss last night by 1 kick in the dying seconds, say.. for instance if Pav's kick off the ground only registered a point. Would you then choose to ignore these stats? We played as a hardened cohesive unit and I haven't seen that since 2010.

If Suban hadn't of called for it, if Dawson hadn't of left his man to make contact .....we won and at the end of of the day good teams get these wins.

Barlow played for 33% of the game and listed as =#3 on our clearances at the end of the game.

We will get better next week.

Agreed. On top of this, Lyon will be very familiar with the SCG and how to play it successfully.

Also, was reading the Record at the footy last night and came across an interview with Fyfe. When asked his favourite footy ground he replied SCG. Frothing already.

Serious facepalm at some of the idiots in this thread. Anyone who watched the game could see our pressure, hardness and intensity were 100% better over 4 quarters than any game last season.

This is reflected by the key stats that every coach focuses on to play winning footy.

Oh and FWIW, winning free kicks for the most part reflects that we were at the contest first and on the bottom of packs

THE biggest myth in football.

Stats are barely even required to justify how much better the team looks. At no point last night did I think we were going to fold or nap for extended sessions. Yes, it was at Subi, yes it was against Geelong and yes, the crowd was as prevalent as it's always been, but this one win was convincing in ways that no game in 2011 was for us. Cynicism drenched every win for me last year. It didn't feel good. This felt really good.

Pretty much this, as Clay originally stated. It's not the stats themselves which are overly impressive, but the manner in which they were won and the opposition they were won against.

We played tough, contested footy. In other words, 2010 footy. Still made some horrendous errors at some stage but for the most part we played pretty decent football. The interesting part will be seeing if it translates to Victoria. If it does, we'll be top 6 fairly comfortably.
