Behind only The Beatles in the list of great 60's bands. The original pop music social commentator and a major influence on weller,blur etc.

what do ya's think of them, for mine were my fav of the 'big 4' 60's rock bands, and probably the best band(in my eyes) before the Doors came around.

There was a recent thread on them, where there praises were sung.

Overall for consistency the best of the British bands. Let's not forget they were still putting out some very good albums throughout the '80's.

Have The Beatles covered, as their's hardly a dud in their canon, whereas The Beatles have plenty. The Beatles, while having some good material have nothing approaching Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, Tired Of Waiting and Celluloid Heroes. For mine Davies is a superior writer.

I'd rate The Who, a better live band at their peak and "Who's Next" would eclipse the best Kinks albums. Sadly went into freefall around the time of Moon's death. The Stones at their peak were great but 30+years of mediocrity weighs heavily against them.

The Small Faces and Pretty Things also deserve mention of bands from that era.

The Beatles, while having some good material have nothing approaching Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, Tired Of Waiting and Celluloid Heroes. For mine Davies is a superior writer.

I know it's matter of opinion but...Strawberry Fields Forever,Eleanor Rigby,A Day In The Life..and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Waterloo Sunset is a great song and one of my faves but the middle two do nothing for me. For me the early Kinks is kinda meh and it's only when you get to songs like Dedicated Follower Of Fashion & A Well Respected Man that they become interesting.

One of my current faves is Dandy..classic!

Brilliant band. At their best, their songs are as good as The Beatles. I also love The Who. The Who had a bit more oomph, so I'd rather have seen them live. I certainly prefer those 3 bands to The Stones, The Doors & The Hollies, but they were all great.

How on earth can you put the Kinks in the same stratosphere as the Beatles and Stones who each had 20+ well known hits in the same period?

Well first off one band lasted 25+ years constantly putting out extremely well written albums.

The other was finished by 1969.

One had hits with original pieces.

The other had all their hits with cover songs or songs written by other people hired by Mickey Most.

One is/was highly influential in music in general.

The other wasn't.


So in all seriousness how can they honestly be put next to each other as equals?

It's asking for clarification as to why you would rate these 2 bands as equals and on what you would base this 'opinion' on.

There's plenty of evidence to show why they aren't equals, I'm interested to see the evidence as to why they are.

So fire away, I'm open to ideas as to why they are equals, show me the reasons why.
