The last game of Razor Ray's career

Probably the biggest thread ever in the umpires section, pretty much says it all.

If you would bail out of the SCG and head over to ANZ you would have a proper footy field which would allow for a better free flowing style of footy. All this congested crap that the SCG creates lends itself to over umpiring.

So thanks to the Game Analyser on the AFL website you can actually see every free kick. Here are the ones I thought were incorrect:

50m against Jesse White - Everyone has to watch this - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=1621&videoQuality=high

The umpire pays the initial hands in the back. Correct decision. He points the right way. He then clearly makes the 'paid the mark' signal with his hands. At this point, Jesse obviously asks "Wait, so it's a mark?" The ump says 'Nope, 50m penalty! Sucks to be you Jesse White!' I don't know how anyone can watch that and not call it an incorrect decision. Umpire clearly stuffs up his signalling and then punishes White because of it. That's 1 goal.

Free kick against Craig Bird on Ballantyne - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2252&videoQuality=high

Bird tackles. It wasn't high initially. Ballantyne lifts his arms, Bird's arms go with them, never actually going around his shoulders. Incorrect decision.

High tackle against Shaw on Hill - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2904&videoQuality=high

Shaw pretty obviously does well not to get Hill in the head. Too bad, free kick. That's 2 goals.

Free kick against LRT for sheperding in a ruck contest - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3059&videoQuality=high

Umpire does a crap throw in, LRT reaches it and touches it, the other ruckman doesn't. Free kick against LRT. What?

Holding the ball against Nick Malceski - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3334&videoQuality=high

Immediate tackle by Mayne. Good tackle, too. Malceski gets taken over the line. Obviously Mayne thinks it's simply a throw in judging by the look on his face after the tackle. Wrong - holding the ball. Shot on goal. He misses.

Free kick against LRT for ruck infringement - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3485&videoQuality=high

Two ruckmen fall over. One gets a free for some unknown reason. Then kicks a goal. That's 3 goals.

Holding the ball against Ted Richards - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=4724&videoQuality=high

This one is 50/50. Richards does dive on the ball. But he clearly turns himself around so he's not on top of it, and the ball bobbles out and then comes back in. Very, very tough call in a wet game. But I'll be generous here and won't count it.

Free kick against Grundy on Ballantyne - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=5023&videoQuality=high

Here's the 'melee'. Watch the video for a couple of minutes, and they'll replay it all. A couple of things to notice - McPhee throwing haymakers at McGlynn directly in front of the emergency umpire with nothing happening. Ballantyne swinging at Grundy. The actual 'jumper punch' being the softest touch of all time. After what's just transpired, paying that free kick before the ball is even bounced is diabolical. 4 goals.

Holding the ball against LRT - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=6379&videoQuality=high

The ball pretty clearly gets kicked underneath LRT and he never dives on it and the Freo player actually has most possession of it, and LRT gets called for holding the ball.

Ruck infringement against Mumford - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=6421&videoQuality=high

Another mysterious ruck infringement, also known as incidental contact that occurs in probably 90% of ruck contests.

Throw against Grundy - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=7816&videoQuality=high

Make up your own mind. At best it's 50/50, and to call a 50/50 when you haven't called them all day in the pouring rain 10m out, is dicey any way you look at it.

There's also one not showing up in the list, and it's the very first goal of the game that Ballantyne got. They just showed it on On the Couch. Pathetic decision. That's 5 goals.

So, not including the final goal, I count 5 goals directly from the result of very, very dubious umpiring decisions. And this also doesn't include the farcical 50m against the water runner.

I've said all I can say now. Time to look to next week.

He points the right way and appears to signal hands in the back...

Free kick against Craig Bird on Ballantyne - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2252&videoQuality=high

Bird tackles. It wasn't high initially. Ballantyne lifts his arms, Bird's arms go with them, never actually going around his shoulders. Incorrect decision.

Clear free kick.

High tackle against Shaw on Hill - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2904&videoQuality=high

Shaw pretty obviously does well not to get Hill in the head. Too bad, free kick. That's 2 goals.

Shaw blatantly throws him out of the contest, are you blind?

That's a free kick for high contact AND holding the man.

He misses.

There is no look on his face?

Also, Malceski simply doesnt make an effort and is happy to be carried across the line, he has the ability to dispose of the ball, by hand or foot, that would have saved him.

Free kick against LRT for ruck infringement - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3485&videoQuality=high

Two ruckmen fall over. One gets a free for some unknown reason. Then kicks a goal. That's 3 goals.

LRT loses his feet first in the battle of strength as he is falling he grabs Clarke and takes him down with him.

It's a clear free kick and holding the man, exactly what Razor Ray signals.

4 goals.

How dumb can you get?

Right in front of the umpire

In regards to the McGlynn, Mcphee tiff neither player connects with their punches, both are holding, play on.

What's the most interesting piece of that footage is the lack of discipline of the Sydney defence, in general play and to give away cheap kicks.

Notice how the ball gets over the back over 3 Sydney players who do no kill the contest, also all three go up leaving Ballantyne uncheck front and centre and Palmer unchecked over the back.

That's terrible defending.

Ruck infringement against Mumford - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=6421&videoQuality=high

Another mysterious ruck infringement, also known as incidental contact that occurs in probably 90% of ruck contests.

Mumford throws his left elbow back straight into Griffens cheekbone.

Nothing incidental about it at all.

Clear free kick.

http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/?round=793&match=10311706&eventType=free&seek=6955&videoQuality=highThrow against Grundy - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=7816&videoQuality=high

Make up your own mind. At best it's 50/50, and to call a 50/50 when you haven't called them all day in the pouring rain 10m out, is dicey any way you look at it.

It's a clear free kick.

Grundy would have been better served by not tapping the ball upwards with an open hand.

But apparently that's allowable in the land of Sydney, home to the Madi Gras.

You're bias is obvious and cringeworthy.

Please look at this clip and tell me what Fyfe does wrong?

http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=7816&videoQuality=high

You can have the 4 points, I feel bad for you and your little brother of a club. I'll stick with the Swans who have tasted success and actually have a culture. :thumbsu:

Looking forward to the next game Gordo. :p

Finally, after 72 years the Swans tasted success. That's the kind of culture I'd like to avoid. I'd also like to avoid being branded with having the culture of choking games to the point of creating unwatchable football.

So thanks to the Game Analyser on the AFL website you can actually see every free kick. Here are the ones I thought were incorrect:
....

It is all well and good to tally up the goals to Freo, but most of those are from 50/50 decisions which while they aren't clear frees, you can still see why they were paid. They are balanced by a similar amount of 50/50 decisions which favoured Sydney which resulted in Sydney goals.

The Hill and Clark goals from frees, plus the Ballantyne jumper punch (which was high, and was 5m from trigger happy Ray) ... these are ones which Sydney fans would likely be upset over, and I have no problem with that. But they aren't any worse than the one to LRT for ducking his head, the 50m penalty against Silvagni, or the throw that Shaw dished off to McVeigh.

Overall, the umpires maybe gave us a clear one-goal advantage going back to the first goal of the game. Maybe 2 goals if you balance out the rest of the afternoon. It happens all the time, more from poor umpiring than any blatant form of cheating. Maybe Sydney aren't used to being on the wrong side.

50m against Jesse White - Everyone has to watch this - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=1621&videoQuality=high
Hands in the back yes, 50m no.

Free kick against Craig Bird on Ballantyne - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2252&videoQuality=high
Called free all the time.

High tackle against Shaw on Hill - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=2904&videoQuality=high
Gets him over the shoulder intially but certainly does well to get out of it. Also a hint of holding the man as Hill never had the ball but it's not there. Poor call but nothing to cry about.

Free kick against LRT for sheperding in a ruck contest - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3059&videoQuality=high
Umpire calls shepherding, from the limited footage it looks like LRT had no intent for the ball and only keeping the other ruckman away. Don't think it's a free kick but you can see why it's paid.

Holding the ball against Nick Malceski - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3334&videoQuality=high
Poor call, no prior. Malsexy could have made more of an effort to dispose of it but it's not there. Bad call.

Free kick against LRT for ruck infringement - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=3485&videoQuality=high
Don't like this call, Clarke took his eyes off the ball and shoved LRT off balance which caused LRT to go ground and Clarke falls over him, hint of a jumper hold on LRT. Bad call, should be play on.

Holding the ball against Ted Richards - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=4724&videoQuality=high
Free kick every day of the week. Dragged it in, gone. Rolling over has nothing to do with it, he should have slapped it off the ground, not grabbed it.

Free kick against Grundy on Ballantyne - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=5023&videoQuality=high
In front of the umpire stupid, but it's not a free kick. A warning would have sufficed.

Holding the ball against LRT - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=6379&videoQuality=high
Not sure what happens here after LRT loses control of it, does it come off the boot of the Freo player and back into LRTs area or does he drag it back in? I think he drags it back in, and if that's the case, Free kick every day. Got to dispose of it no matter if you are being tackled.

Ruck infringement against Mumford - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=6421&videoQuality=high
Throws his arm back and makes contact with the head, always going to be called.

Throw against Grundy - http://www.gameanalyser.afl.com.au/...06&eventType=free&seek=7816&videoQuality=high
100% throw. I'd be pissed off if they didn't call it.

Poor umpiring this game but hardly worth the uproar and I blame the commentators. You get these idiots ranting about the decisions all day and the simple folk are going to repeat what you say. Repeat it enough times and soon it becomes the "truth". Now every free kick that Selwood and Johnson get's is a dive or a duck (even though ducking is a legitimate way of evading a tackle).

And for all those complaining about that "huge 50m penalty" should really learn the size of the markings. It was paid roughly 5m inside the edge of the centre square, the centre square is 50m on all sides. If the umpire walks in a straight line it would an extra 5m past the centre square down the other end. The umpire doesn't go in a straight line but in a direct line to the goals, which would make it around the 50m arc. The umpire stops at the 45. At worst the penalty was no more than 55m long.

Link didn't work for me but Im assuming it's the one in the last quarter for LRT.

LRT had his head over the ball and Fyfe runs in and makes contact with the head. LRT may have kept his head down for a little bit but Fyfe should know that he has to tackle him correctly there as he's the one that makes contact.

If it's the last one in the 2nd quarter then I suggest you see a doctor for your myopia.

See that's the thing, you went and tallied up all the kicks given and ummed and ahhhd a bit but what was frustrating for Sydney fans are cases where Jesse White had a 50 against him. To the letter of the law, yes it was there, but then in a free kick at the other end in the same quarter a free is given and Lower soccers the ball away, wasting more time than White with no fifty.

Right before the Malceski free, Mayne knocked out Mattner flying for a mark without making contact, not paid and a moment later the ridiculous HTB, which wasn't paid with the same severity for Ballantyne or Fyfe gave Freo another shot. The Ballantyne free after a goal was also technically correct, but why was that paid and not against Ballantyne who came in and bumped Grundy and missed a few swipes before Grundy jumper punched him. You're not allowed to attempt to strike your opponent either and Razor was there for it.

The what?

It may have taken a long time, but we got there. You haven't, and the Swans are much closer to winning a flag than Freo are. :thumbsu:

I think you'll find that the 'choking' tag is a stigma attached to St Kilda now, and is very much a Ross Lyon tactic. It worked for us though, and considering you have players like Ballantyne and McPhee, it's quite obvious you'll do anything to win also. :D

Good call, mate. Spot on. Umps, Chamberlain in particular had a horror run for ten mins in the third, which went a long way to switching momentum, and therefore had a marked influence on the game.

The 'throw' can be debated, but there is no excuse for dishing out a seventy metre penalty when fifty for such a minor infraction is too harsh.

Really frustrating to watch the game today, even as a neutral supporter. I can only feel for Swans fans today. Also, several Essendon fans in this thread have embarrassed themselves. Garbage umpiring is universal - not just when it happens to your team.

Yes but when it happens to us it doesn't seem to be universally acknowledged.

Wow, it's good to see Ray gipping another team for a change.

Some good analysis but I would say Ted Richards is holding the ball according to the current rules.

As for the Grundy throw, technically it was holding the man because he never took possesion of the ball, it was just bobbing about and he tapped it on. Happy for that to be play on. However, the player who got the ball to Grundy appeared to throw it to him, the fist did make contact but it was after the ball left his hand, maybe the umpire was paying that.

Jeff Geischan has given the overall performance of the umpires a pass mark. He has even given Razor Ray a thumbs up. All of the decision Jeff reviewed were correct except that one of the 50m penalties was a few meters long.

We'd be pretty stiff to get a holding the man call after two throws - play on probably would have been fine, but there were two throws there after all

oh, and what reg said

glad ray's got the thumbs up because the frees were there - the consistency, however, was not there. that's what fans should be p***ed about, not the calls themselves

Exactly. It was when the same decision should have been made and wasnt that I got heated.

Someone was talking about the holding the man above and there were so many of them on Sunday including one that should have been paid to Goodes for having his arm held while trying to move to a free ball and he wasnt allowed. He was just too silky and still kicked a goal anyway.

If there were any mistakes I'am sure that Jeff would admit it. As I have said in other forums the level of accuracy the umpires have is very high!

Should change his/her username from Saints Supporter to Umpires Supporter. Would be more appropriate, I don't think I've seen them posting about anything other than pumping up Gieschen and the umpires.

Has to be either trolling or a clueless moron like Gieschen, maybe even one of his aliases.
