It was interesting to hear the comment on OTC that everyone else is getting the ground for free but they expect the AFL teams to pay millions.

Surprised the local media hasn't picked up on it and put some questions to Mick Murray.
I thought it was generally understood that this was the case. AFL games that were already being held in Perth are ho hum to the government, it's attracting 'events' that gets them excited.

Frankly, I am a little surprised the NRL are getting it for free, and not being paid to come.

I always suspected that. If that is the case I'm not voting labor.
They sports minister literally said stfu to the public about nrl getting first dibs.
I have have no problem with that if they are paying.
But WTF is the government doing not charging and not charging for the de facto opening.
WTF is the government doing giving not charging for two events that will struggle to attract 30k.
WTF is the government doing giving not charging for an event that will bring no more tourists than an AFL match.
That is absolutely pathetic.
The sports minister said he was fed up with the delays - well I can see why football cannot stomach the sports minister.

I think it's great.
Let them waste their money if that's what they wish.
After the first game of AFL nobody will care one iota.

You have to admit these Sydney-siders are like that.
They build a state-of-the-art rectangular stadium right next door to the SCG to spite AFL.
These days it's lucky to be half-full yet they want to tear it down and rebuild it again because everybody is going to the SCG. It's going to have two modes - normal for normal crowds and shut down for NRL.
There want to re-juvinate ANZ stadium. however the NRL H&Aaverage is 9k.
Real smart these cookies from the East.

I think the NRL will get a bigger crowd to the double header than what you think. There seems to be a positive vibe about it on social media. A lot of people taking about heading over, etc.

At the end of the day the NRL is a company selling their product, the AFL is their main competition, can't blame them for trying to get one up on the AFL. The AFL do it to them in Sydney.

You love having a dig at NSW and Sydney siders, but even with all the 'sh*t house stadiums; the city still gets the events. Cant stay Perth has had the most impressive stadiums of the last 30 years. Perth builds a stadium and then you get all worked up when sports want to use it.

Some bloody awesome events are locked in their over the next few years.

Anyways it looks freakin awesome and im sure any state of this country would love to have it in their backyard.

I'm in the same boat as you, and personally I don't have a problem with it if it's an event that's actually going to bring in a heap of tourists. The State of Origin probably will so I can see why they'd get a good deal. The Bledisloe cup less so, hard to see too many Aussies flying over and NZ is too far away to be getting many from there. The NRL games? They can't even attract crowds to games in Sydney, what makes anyone at the WA government think that people are going to fly over for that? Might get a handful of diehards.

But in any case, even if it is widely known within the sporting community, it's a pretty good clickbait headline that the government is screwing the Eagles and Dockers, so i'm surprised they haven't created a story or 2 around it. To the average Joe, giving your best customers the worst deal is the opposite of good business.

Great example of ambush marketing by the NRL.

At the end of the day the NRL is a company selling their product,

Yes, I'd be ecstatic if they were paying money and paying off the stadium. But are they ?

Yes, Perth cheaped out and we're paying the price for it now.
Sydney cheaped out on so many occasions it's not funny.

There was a huge amount of pressure applied to West Australian football yet zero pressure pressure on cricket to come to the party.
We could have had the new stadium substantially cheaper at the WACA with the same arrangement as A.O.
But that was obviously to simple.

If we can get 5,000+ NRL fans flying over to check out the stadium and the city, then it's been a good move by the government.

In about 7months time none of this matters and to be honest it all sounds like a bunch of primary school kids during recess comparing their trading cards or whatever it is kids boast about these days (fidget spinners?).

Events that attract non West Australians are what the government should be discounting the stadium/paying for. Unfortunately as football fans with a guaranteed 22 games a season there's not much they need to do for us...

It depends on whether the NRL are paying market rates for the privilege - considering the timing it should be above market rates.

Love how the lights are on the roof
Is Australia the only country in the world with light towers?
I can't think of any stadiums outside of Australia with them.

We're finally moving into the 21st century

Plenty of MLB stadiums have light towers. Same with GAA grounds in Ireland. There's just two examples.

If we can get 5,000+ NRL fans flying over

The government's figure is 3,000

then it's been a good move by the government.

How exactly ?

it all sounds like a bunch of primary school kids .

Not when we have an immense state debt an a stadium that's not charging.

Events that attract non West Australians are what the government should be discounting the stadium/paying for.

And what events and in what level would they be ?
3,000 tourists don't cover the cost of opening a stadium.

That's Union, not League. Though one would think Union is the better followed game in WA

17,528 at NIB stadium for a rugby national.
And a couple of NRL finals in Sydney <15k doesn't bode well for new stadium as a (paying) event stadium.
