The Next Big Thing - Jake Stringer

Future forward that plays part time midfield, or midfielder that rests forward?

Think he'll be a forward that plays part time midfield, given our midfield depth as it is.

Might be a good 70/30 forward/midfield split with the Bont.

I don't think OP realises how hard it is to kick 50 goals in a season of AFL. Last year 10 players in the league did it. You really think Jake Stringer is going to be a top 10 forward in the league this season?

Right now sitting equal 10th with Jack Gunston on 40 Goals...Still a chance to get to 50 goals with 4 games to go...What;s your thoughts on him now?

Stringer is averaging 2.4 goals per game. To put it into perspective Hawthorns gun three forward line of Bruest is averaging 2.3 goals a game, Gunston is averaging 2.2 goals a game and Jarryd Roughead is averaging 2.0 goals per game. Stringer has been monumental to our season so far, I've maintained the stance Stringer has the most potential on our list (Even more than The Bonts!) for a while now. His only 21 as well, will only get better from here, especially with Toyd coming into his third season next year and hopefully taking the #1 defender each week.

Looks like the type that will have a day out and kick 12 or 13 and there won't be much you can do to stop it.

He's that sort of player, I think. If he ever has a 10+ goal game, it will be something to behold!

Once his confidence is up, he can do unbelievable things, as he's already shown at times...

A little bit flat track bully with his numbers but boy he's impressive.

Not many mid/forwards worry you with less than 15 touches a game.

Is he going to be a 20 touch, 2 goal a game player or a 15 touch, 3 goal a game player?

Most of us Doggies would take either. :thumbsu:

Another 4 goals today (should have been five if not for one being wrongly overturned on reply) including one goal of the year contender. Has now kicked 40 goals for the year while also spending time in the midfield.

If you're going to mention the goal that was 'wrongly' (debatable) overturned, then mention the goal that he got by blatantly cheating and taking Liam Picken's free kick because the umpires weren't paying attention. And goal of the year contender? He kicked the ball over his head from 2 metres out in the goalsquare. Kicking the ball a short distance over your head isn't hard. I could do that. If you're a reasonably coordinated person you could do that too. The guy is a very good player, but this post is off the mark.

I'm sure this post will get called bitter, and maybe it is, but that doesn't mean that it's not true.

Wells was into him bigtime, I believe he was considering trading to get one of the picks in the mini draft just for stringer

Sory, S-fest, but it does sound rather bitter...

when you kick 4.4 and have a really odd one overturned, saying he should've had 5 really ain't that far off the mark. some real salt in this post.

You're taking the loss well.

So none of you can actually dispute anything I said then? Good.

I already admitted that my post was bitter. Every word of it was true though.

Okay.

You could not kick that goal under the same pressure. Otherwise, you'd be playing the game at the highest level.

There was nothing debatable about the reversed goal. They showed the camera angle on which it was reversed, and even the Port supporters around us couldn't believe it. One of the strangest decisions I've ever seen. Great effort by the Port backman attempting to stop it, though.

Blatantly cheating - how do you know that? Have you checked with the umpire in question?

He is already a star. Why do you think otherwise - apart from the fact that your team got whipped yesterday?
In a one-on-one contest on the ground, Stringer will get his hands on the ball. Every time. Check the replays if you doubt me. Not just from yesterday, but throughout the season.

All clubs (except Port, obviously) would love to have him. He'd be a gun forward in every other team as well.

Your comments are the sour grapes of a sore loser.

Watch from 1:06. Picken lays a tackle on O'Shea. Holding the ball is called. Stringer picks the ball up and takes the shot. Unfortunately the highlights video cuts out the bit where the commentators were bemused about how the hell Stringer ended up taking the shot.

So the umpire getting it wrong is Stringer blatantly cheating?

You are making yourself look like an idiot

Mate, if you can't kick a ball 5-10 metres over your head, you shouldn't be playing at Div 5 ammos level.

You couldn't tell either way from that vision whether it was touched or not, because the AFL apparently can't be bothered stumping up for decent cameras to conduct their goal reviews. I suppose you could say that as the vision was inconclusive the original call should have been overturned, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the original call was correct.

Did I not post 'the guy is a very good player'? Of course he is. But that doesn't mean that he didn't steal a goal from a free kick that wasn't his, and it doesn't mean that a goal from 2 metres out is a goal of the year contender.

Far out.

Kicking goals at AFL level is not easy. I say that because it's hard at most levels. If you think you'd kick it under the same match day pressure, nominate for the draft, send your game tapes around to all clubs showing off your elite skills, sit back and wait for the call to play. Oh, and get yourself a manager - you'll need it.

The replay was indeed inconclusive. The goal umpire called it a goal. When the tape is inconclusive, the goal umpire's call stands.
That.is.the.rule. Please understand that.

"Stealing" a goal reduces him from 'great' to 'good'? Wow.

Your comments are just plain sore loser.

From the other camera angle (on the replay, but not in that highlights video) it looks like Stringer was the only one with hands on O'Shea when he actually dropped the ball. I wonder whether that was the umpire's logic? Perhaps I'm just giving him too much credit...

At the time, I was disappointed that Stringer took the kick because Picken's probably a more reliable set shot, but Stringer seemed to be kicking pretty well yesterday. Hopefully he can keep it up from now on.

But that doesn't mean that he didn't steal a goal from a free kick that wasn't his

Do you remotely understand that the umpire calling the free makes the decision on who takes the kick? Go complain about the umpiring.. Don't shoot the messenger

I was laughing about that tackle at the game thinking Jake had pulled a swifty, but at the moment he dropped the ball Picken's tackle had come loose and Stringer had his hand on the player.

It looked farcical but on reflection wasn't that bad an adjudication.

Also why didn't the Port players complain? Oh I know, they weren't interested in the game after 10 minutes.

You sound like a shitty Tom Yum sour, bitter and so so salty, if the players didn't care about the game why do you?
