Hawk Fans,

The NMFC is holding a benefit concert to raise awareness and funds in an attempt to stop the AFL moving them to the Gold Coast.

Here is the link detailing the when, where and who of the gig.

Remember, this thread is a North Board thread so please be respectful - if it was my club on the skids (and it once was) I would appreciate any help I could get.

Cheers,

Binxy

.

Well done, Binxy. Very thoughtful of you.

I would hate to see one of the old VFL sides die. The Hawks and North have an affinity. I have fond memories of the North Past Players Association's catering and caring for the kids of the Hawks Little League teams when I was in charge of them on visits to Arden Street.

I hope all goes well for an old club which joined the VFL from the VFA in the same year as our club.

It is not a war to save our club, financially we are not in any real danger at present, it is about fighting to save the Melbourne football culture. We want a national competition and expansion of the game, but not at the expense of the football culture in Melbourne.

The more clubs that move from Melbourne the harder it becomes on every other club that remains until we get to the point clubs need 50-60k members to survive.

It has massive implications even for a club like Hawthorn that has done well to re-establish a strong base here in Melbourne. Our 7 games at TD will be forced on other Melbourne clubs, that means more home games away from your home, our large slice of pay-tv live and exclusive games will also pass on to other Melbourne clubs and you know it wont be Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon picking up the slack.

Melbourne clubs have as symbiotic relationship, we do not need a million plus supporters, a state divided by just two teams where there is a waiting list for memberships and not being able to watch our clubs being the norm because our cutlure is different, it is why Melbourne is the home of football, why players want to play here. Each club supports eachother, people go to home and away games, you get the support of opposition fans and we don't ride the rollercoaster of perform or perish like the Brisbane Lions. Would Brisbane survive a Richmond-like period of 27 years of on-field woes? They wouldn't make it past 10 years.

Our culture is worth fighting for and protecting, it is worth more than a bit of extra revenue on a profit statement or another point of tv ratings. Once we destroy our football culture it will be irreversible and what we have loved for many generations will be gone and denied to ourselves and future generations.

If we allow clubs to fall then it wont stop until there are only a few left in Melbourne and the AFL are blatantly obvious which ones they wish those to be.

North have struggled to market their club for many years. They've had down periods and they've had periods of success, but the club has failed to build on them.
The merger/relocation ghost has long been hanging over thier heads in recent memory. It's a consequence of poor attendances, poor memebrship and poor marketing to take advantage of a club which is no stranger to success or household names(Carey).
This push to try and keep the Roos in Melbourne is only delaying the inevitable. The writing has been on the wall for some time and the AFL will get what they want.

Try and keep this thread positive - there's plenty of other threads to vent your spleen.

You could have said the same things about Hawthorn in the late 90s, went through a massive era in the 70s and 80s but the supporters became apathetic, in the end it took Don Scott to show some passion and anger and the commitment of Dicker and other people who put a lot on the line and it made a difference because the fundamental rule of human behaviour is that people can change and quite dramatically.

At times you have to hit rock bottom until there is enough catalyst for significant change which can lead to a totally different outcome. Who would have thought Hawks could have 30k+ members back when the ink was almost dry on your merger plans.

If enough people believe they can make a difference and do something about it then the outcome can be very different to what is expected.

The man behind this one is Tim Rogers, frontman of You Am I.
One of those rare celebrities that not only professes his love of his footy club, but actually attends games and assists the club in many ways.
I'll be doing my best to get down there and support not only my mate Tim, but also a football club that I admire and respect.

Good work Binxy.:thumbsu:

And here's the ad which will be running on MMM and a couple of other stations this week to promote the gig. We'e confident of selling it out by Friday (FWIW - we sold 200 tix in the 1st hour)

Just wondering is there any available website dedicated to donations to the club?

In short, No.

Our issue is not raising $$. The James Brayshaw led team have the $$ and backers to give us a similiar financial nett result without moving.

Our main issue is raising awareness and influencing shareholders & pro Gold Coasters to resist the bait (aka bribes) from the AFL.

Who and what was it that saved us from merging with Melbourne in '96? Was it a similiar thing to what NM are trying to do now?

Similair, but different. Your future was in the hands of the members. Our fate is in the hands of 8 directors and 3-4 shareholders.
