Steady on grandpa!

Don't you just use Spotify or something and listen to new release playlists on that?

And surely it gets put up on iView. I didn't think people still recorded things!
Now listen here sonny. Ha!

Yeah I have family account on spotify although one of my favourite bands (King Gizzard) left Spotify a few months ago in protest.

I have Foxtel ($62 a month for everything) and record certain Rage segments. It's easier to fast fwd than streaming on iView. If it's a guest programmer i like or certain specials. It's always and remains a great source of new stuff ..even new (for me) that may have been around years ago.

HAs a better strike rate for me than Spotify

The genre of music in the hottest 100 is different to what it used to be, but the kids they are a changing. I don't pay attention to it anymore as the music is generally not to my taste. I grew up on the early 2000s JJJ, looking at the Hottest 100 list from those days it is very different.

Hottest 100 was fantastic, loved the 2005 countdown on Sunday.

Yep, it really stood out how rock-dominant it was. I wouldn't say it was overly diverse for that reason, but it was music I largely enjoyed and it was a nice throwback (and the rock at least had some edge to it).

I love the number 1 song, I think she's great. She is such a joy to watch live.
Given what finished second and third, I was happy to see it win. Nothing ground-breaking, but a nice melody that's a pleasant listen.

Had this conversation with my wife the other day - unless a song is in an ad, TV show, social media, it's not going to have the same cut through as the top 40 had even 10 years ago. Back then you'd probably have more recognition of a song sat 20th in the countdown than the number one does these days. Everything has just become so fragmented and curated.
Yeah there’s plenty of music out there these days and so much access plus there’s algorithms directing people towards particular sounds etc. it’s hard to keep up. I think I’m pretty good at it too but I still hadn’t heard a lot of the top 100.

Curious how people are feeling about Spotify at the moment? I feel it’s the best service out there but I do have some moral quandaries about using it due to the owners involvement in wars.

Also, is Rage still like it used to be? Or more watered down? Etc

Yeah well Daniel Ek has invested over a billion in Germain AI military tech company and worse he’s their chairman!

Other dodgy stuff on Spotify. When King Gizzard left a AI generated account calling itself King Lizard Wizard started up and used identical song titles and lyrics with similar sounds. Spotify algorithms continued to recommend it for months until finally stopped it after media coverage. It’s also happened to other artists who have left the platform.

Don’t find Rage watered down. Like the discussion here though I do find less interesting music than I did 20 years ago simply because I enjoyed that period more.

Here’s their playlists

Had no idea about the King Gizzard AI situation. I’d heard about that other made up AI band though.

Thanks For the Rage link.

I listen to loads of new music all the time but very rarely come across the stuff that’s on Triple J anymore.

Obviously it’s subjective, but feel like there’s much better tunes out there that aren’t ever on rotation so they don’t have the opportunity to be chosen.

We are also in the TikTok era where people attention spans are short and they are hearing tunes off the apps which influence their choices.

I’m happy in a way because it means if those artists come to Australia for a gig, I have better chances of grabbing tickets.

The Hottest 100 is curated. There's virtually no chance of an artist getting many votes if Triple J don't include them on their playlist.

The Rolling Stone best albums list is better for finding talented artists you might not have heard before. For example, Geese.

You can add your own music onto the list. I’ve done it before but they do show you songs that have been played frequently on their initial voting slips.

Just wait til Seeds rants about whatever the popular tv show of the day is.
Surprised he could find time while sitting on the Blicavs is shit and Stewart > Enright hills he refuses to die on for the last decade.

I HATE that when I press shuffle on my playlist it doesn't shuffle the whole ****ing playlist.

That's what I thought. How many tracks are on the initial list? It's going to be stuff Triple J have chosen to play over the year. You can add songs that are eligible but they are unlikely to get many votes. Maybe Geese was a bad example.

There's definitely an algorithm involved. I have shuffle on and while it shuffles, it definitely isn't random as there's plenty of songs (I have about 700 on there) that never appear, even when I shuffle multiple times.

I assume it's any song played on JJJ during the year that was made in 2025. Or maybe they limit it to a song that was saying played 10 times during the year.

The thing is that it's the triple j Hottest 100, not the objective Hottest 100 right. So it kinda makes sense that their shortlist (of like 900 songs) would be limited to what they played.

700 on where? Your playlist?

Yeah pretty much but tbh, if I vote, I only vote stuff that’s on the list because they are more likely to be chosen.

Yes. I go through periods of adding stuff. There arent a lot of good stations in Ireland that play new music and I don't spend a lot of time in the car anymore, so that's why I don't like anything new on JJJ. Even when we were in Aus for Xmas I didn't like a lot of it, personal taste.

And it shuffles the same song multiple times in the playlist?

I've definitely had it occur where it appears some songs play significantly more than others across multiple listening sessions. One playlist of mine which was 800 or so songs was obsessed with me hearing one particular Arctic Monkeys song.

I think it's actually a known thing that Spotify (and maybe others) shuffle feature isn't "true random" because people hear two songs by the same artist back to back or something and think it's not shuffling, ironically.

Oh I get it over multiple sessions for sure. And yeah I used to think that with my iPod when I'd get two songs from an artist back to back. But really it's just noticeable when it happens so it sticks in your memory.
