Whats the difference between that and catching planes across France in 98 or Germany? (can take a long time by bus/train to get somewhere in Germany despite the "fast" trains)

Well the time difference is pretty significant for those travelling from S America to Europe / Africa.

They're only playing a couple of games there and thats it.
But presumably those teams will have to back up for another game within a week while other teams can go direct to Spain/Portugal/Morocco and prepare.

It definitely disadvantages the teams playing in South America for those few games.

Advantage later in the tournament?

Don't forget it'll be 48 teams so longer WC, meaning it will easily be more than a week and they'll probably be playing teams in the same situation

Seems unfair for the teams that need to catch a plane over to Morocco, Spain or Portgual for the rest of the group games. Messy outcome but joint bids for big sporting events is becoming more frequent given the rising cost of hosting.
Would be fine if it was the same continent. This idea is bloody stupid.

Agree with this.

Even in Russia 2018 they didn't have games being played in Vladivostok which is the same timezone as AEST.

All venues were in western Russia, mostly within the same time zone.

Imagine a team plays in Uruguay on a Saturday (GMT -3) then plays their next game in Morocco (GMT+1) on Tuesday. Not great.

Think they should have just stayed with Africa / Europe or South America as hosts.

What if Paraguay or Uruguay don't qualify? Or do they now qualify as hosts?

There's 48 teams so they'll automatically qualify as hosts.

CONEMBOL qualifying is a farce now anyway. They've got 6.5 qualifying spots out of 10 member nations. One of those - Venezuela - is shit.

Paraguay have finished 9th, 7th and 8th in the last 3 qualifications

Venezuela have already beaten Paraguay is the 2026 qualifications

Imagine they'll give CONEMBOL 7 spots instead of 6.5 for this tournament. The hosts will have to be involved surely.

Apparently only Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the hosts countries. The South America nations would still need to qualify.

I can definitely see in the future 2 or 3 South American countries hosting the World Cup which would made the qualification a bit of a farce now that 6 counties are guaranteed a spot. We could very well see a World Cup with 8 or more South American countries involved.

That's only going to be an issue for Paraguay realistically. Absolutely no way Argentina / Uruguay don't finish in the top 6 of CONEMBOL.

I missed the part in Ornstein’s tweet saying they will qualify as hosts, I read elsewhere that they won’t. If what Ornstein said is the case, there would be 9 guaranteed spots for Conmebol nations at the 2030 WC and a chance of all 10, with one getting in via the playoffs. Pretty wild stuff.

Normally host spots get taken out of the confederation spots. So would be 3.5 spots for the remaining 7 teams

Bit of a joke Maguire & Nkeitah gets a gig but JWP does not. Saka included is interesting. Arse fans surely not happy about that.

Not sure what JWP has to do to get a gig. Unfortunately, these coaches become mates with the players and won't drop them if they are undeserving.

When Kalvin Phillips is getting a game despite not even being used by Man City when Rodri is suspended...

A mid-season WC might end up happening for any number of reasons. Saudi Arabia could well be hosting in 2030, and to say it will never happen again means deliberately excluding a large portion of the world from being able to host.

In your opinion.

Well I was 4 years off with this but Saudi Arabia firming as hosts for the 2034 WC.
