Media The Opposition: A Weekly Analysis of a Match Thread

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Hi All,

Each week I will be bringing you a review of the match thread that the Gold City Royals have just completed. The aim of this is to give some insight into where each club is sitting regarding 3 key areas:

Posting Unit

I will be analysing the top and bottom 3 opposition posters from the week. To qualify the posters must have made at least 3 posts. This will not be aimed at the posters themselves, more just a reflection of their substance and style as a unit. I will also be posting stats surrounding their engagement as a whole.

Opposition Engagement

This is all about how insular I found the week. It will be a fairly arbitrary measure out of 10: 10 being complete engagement with the opposition, and 0 being a refusal to even acknowledge the opposition.

Posting Culture

This one is a bit harder to define, being the general approach to posting as a unit. This will be focused upon how the opposition approached us in their style: for instance they may be a happy-go-lucky group who doesn't take life too seriously. Or an arrogant group with a staunch refusal to believe anything but their group-think.

Conclusion

I will then bring the entire piece together with some final thoughts on where I see the club heading for the remainder of the season and, if towards the end of S29, into next season.

These will generally be posted on a Monday, however tomorrow is going to be a ****ed day at work so I am going to be pumping out the first installment this afternoon.

A thread on why everyone sucks compared to the Royals, can't wait!!!

In all seriousness, if completed with a thoroughness and professionalism you haven't yet reached, it will be a really interesting thread.

Las Vegas Bears

Round 1 saw the Las Vegas Bears travel to Gold City to take on my Royals. It was a good way to start the season, with the opposition not throwing any curve balls at us, or taking anything too seriously. Behind closed doors most of our comments revolved around how their list and performance in the match thread felt a bit empty, so let's dive in.

Posting Unit

Top 3

1- tgrs

We worked really hard to get tgrs to the Royals when we heard that he was making a comeback. Back in the day he was a very balanced match thread poster who was able to be fun, relevant, and get his hands dirty with banter. He made a blazing start to the match thread and was absolutely their best contributor to the thread until he had a quiet spell from Thursday through Saturday. He was good humoured, kept it relevant and was the only Bear who offered any sort of antagonism and had a dip. His 23 posts for the week puts him right in the sweet spot of being a presence, but not over-doing it. Hopefully this kind of output sees him enjoy his time and make this comeback a long one.

2 - JoshWoodenSpoon

This is where it gets tricky for the Bears. Josh was up and about early in the week and, along with tgrs, laid a solid foundation in defending his club and getting stuck into the Royals. The issue? He doesn't actually play for the club anymore. The fact that he was their 2nd best poster in the opening week of the season, whilst playing for the Bombers, says a lot.

3 - Cap

I was very impressed with the debutant, he took to the thread like a fish to water. He was quick-witted and a lot of fun, and managed to keep it qooty relevant for the most part. I am interested in seeing how he develops through-out the season, having not seen him around the site I am hoping he has the potential to add a harder edge to his posting - something the Bears desperately need.

Bottom 3

1 - MWPP

This may be a slightly controversial selection given that MWPP contributed 48 posts in the thread to be their second-highest contributer. But they are just such "chatty" posts that it really does make me wonder if I was in a match thread or a general discussion thread. Between HP references, and discussions about other boards on BigFooty, the thing that really drove this rating was the need to build a friendly rapport with the Fremantle fans on our side. Firstly, the **** does who you support in the AFL have to do with the SFA? Secondly, they're Fremantle fans and you barrack for West Coast, if you're going to reference the AFL in here at least have a dip at them.

2 - Test Tickle

Another controversial inclusion given he topped their post-count with 69 (hee hee) and led the side as skipper. But the thing about being a captain in the SFA is that you need to bring your posting unit into the thread and engage them. Most of the 69 (still funny) posts were needless filler, and on the weekend dissolved into cooney-esque barracking. Very few were tagging teammates, very few were leading from the front, and very few even warranted a response from the Royals.

3 - Lemon Boi

This one is harsh, but the Bears only had 3 other posters who topped the 3 post minimum: AuntyBlindEye was in the conversation as a top poster and I enjoyed Matera92 's Bearly Legal schtick. I have no idea who this person in, and their 6 posts for the week did nothing to inspire me. A good foot soldier who will probably find himself in their Bears midfield soon enough.

Opposition Engagement

Those who were in the thread certainly did engage and respond to Royals posters. The problem is that they only contributed 35% of the match thread, and the bulk of that came from 2 posters. Of those who engaged, I only found tgrs was the one who could be considered "elite" in engagement, whilst Test Tickle, MWPP, and Cap were decent. They weren't at all insular, however I feel that they could have driven the banter a bit harder. By the weekend it had dissolved into "go team!" style posting, not really conducive to letting the opposition in.

4/10

Posting Culture

The week was enjoyable, but in a friendly way. It was like a casual darts game down at the local. The Bears lack some tough nuts in the list, their go to this week was good-natured general discussion and team barracking. There was barely a whimper in terms of trying to bait the Royals. It turned into a bit of a nothing week really.

Conclusion

I am seriously concerned for the Bears going forward. Their 2nd best poster this week doesn't even play for the club, and the 35% contribution against one of the weaker posting lists from S28 is setting off alarm bells. They need some of the posters we didn't see to step-up, or need to work hard to add some posters during the season. Personally I found it hard to engage with anyone who wasn't tgrs, and spent more of my week re-acclimatising myself to sharing a bunk bed with spookism.

What is this school report shit on the opposing side fascination with some of you knobs lately?

Ok so you want to back up what your shit club did to some other club with a few late backhanders and look like s complete stud with your club mates but all it does is make look like s jibbering toss pot to the rest of the SFA who don’t give two shits about whether you think Player A has a better package than Player Z.

This thread could have easily been placed at the end of the game thread and I and many others would never had to have seen it, I’ve seen it....
It was shit and made me throw some stones at the neighbours cat.
I got it good.
It took off and I hope it gets run over.

I hope those of you who make these threads are made to apologise to everyone in the SFA.

I'm dehydrated just reading that. If this thread is going to keep prompting lethal salt levels like this then I'm all for it. Keep it up Noobz0r!

If you add the word "Bombers" to this post there's enough salt in this post to earn yourself a nomination in their latest "look at us" piece.

Can we get through this match thread without any Harry Potter references?

Why, it would take a philosophers stone to answer this.

MWPP

There goes the no Harry Potter comments

Your HP dig would’ve had merit if you and then 2 of your teammates hadn’t brought it up before I did. I generally post in a chatty manner and make no apologies for that . The ironic thing is that your own posts were of that nature too.

As for the Freo fan engagement thing - I try and go out of my way to interact with rookies , and yours just happened to mostly be Freo fans from the tour game and that thread had a lot of goodwill in it. It’s not the place to have a dig at someone due to or based on the footy team they support (there’s the Bay /main board for that ).

Yeah I think the Royals analysing the posts of others is a bit like an alcoholic criticising the drinking habits of others :).

In fairness to the Bears they had 35% of the posts excluding JWS's posts.

I wonder if there is some truth in a post I think MWPP made on the weekend about how the Bears were doing all of their posting in the team PM... I thought that would have been a real shame. Otherwise I thought their leaders batted well but conversely if they hadn't have drafted Cap during the week we'd all be wondering about their rookie potential this season (no harsh on Lemon Boi who I hope comes out of his heh heh heh rind as the season goes on). Still it was a perfectly fine season opener.

You mean the Royals with a total of four beez medals in their ranks? More MVP votes and All-SFA's than any other club in the league?

I would have accepted this if you'd just mentioned Noobz.

Home and Away has won a shitload of Logies and awards over the years too. Doesn't mean it's not a festering pile of turds.

That's fine, it's not how this works.

I was really just using the opportunity to light the flame under Noobz before his homecoming.

I think SFA awards carry a little more weight than Logies

I’ve always said you’re the Toadfish Rebecchi of the Sweet FA

Well I've always said you were the Tadpole Rebecchi of the Sweet FA.

Which makes us cousins.
