So one of the locks for round one, has now become unlocked!

Petrie has accepted his one match ban for being an idiot and will now miss round one. Combine this with an early bye (round three), and the conundrum starts to gather speed.

Petrie will be a cash cow in 2011, and more than likely a keeper if he fires, but can you afford to have him sitting on the pine for two out of the first three weeks?

I've made my decision. What's yours??

EDIT: Mods please merge if already discussed in Rucks/Forward thread.
We'll see how far it gets...

I'll might look at bringing him in for round 5 to cover an underperforming forward. Although it also throws the ruck/forward DP option out of whack if I don't pick him making J Tippett useless (doubt he'll play)

Can be easily kept on the bench it's just a matter of do you waste the trade and make money on someone else before you bring him in

He is no longer in my side - I will pick him up round 5 in a forward/ruck swap.

I hadn't locked Petrie in - I was waiting to see whether or not his feet gave him any more problems.

Indeed! You wold have to be a MADMAN to have him in at Round 1 now.

I had to get rid of him, downgraded a premium and used the cash to upgrade him to jolly.
Atleast now my rucks are locked loaded and i shouldnt need to touch them

Depends on how you look at really, if it looks like his body will hold up then it is viable to have him on your bench for the first few rounds. Although it has made me change my strategy, I have now dumped J Tippett and moved Petrie to my Ruck bench. I'll need cover in rounds 5 & 7 (Cox/Jolly) so I'll leave Petrie/Smith as my cover. If Petrie starts scoring well enough then when it comes down to my first downgrade trade in my forwards I will bring in J Tippett and swap them round. Either way I am factoring in for Petrie to be in my side until round 16 at the earliest as I will be using him to cover Cox & Jolly for their second byes (injuries permitting).

Petrieand J.Tippett is out for me..

If he comes back and scores back to back 100s then I'll trade him in before Round 5 to be emergency for Cox...so if Z.Smith gets a game, then no need to trade Petrie in..but if Z. Smith doesn't get a game then Petrie in (especially if he gets back to back 100s)..

But that requires me to get Cox, which I'm not sure yet..

Had PeeTree in the forwards, have now put him as R3 and slotted Gamble into the forward line.

Still unconvinced about my decision.

Petrie is my first ruck bench, so I can afford to leave him in for the time being (provided Sandi and Jolly start round 1). Treating him like a rookie, hoping he will turn into a keeper, but for the time being all I need from him is too make a little bit of cash and provide good back once back from suspension.

Was in my team but have now taken him out not because he is now suspended

I just cant see him not getting injured and for the same price i can have Fraser who will play all year

Fraser is fairly injury prone himself. Hasn't had an injury free season since 2006. So just be weary, because his knee's could go at any point through out the year.

Could look at it this way, pretend he is a slow burning cash cow who has two early byes a la GC rookies.

Currently have:
Petrie as F7

Rucks
Sandi
Jolly
J.Tippett (R/F)
Z.Smith

I'm of the opinion that you don't use trade in your rucks unless you get a LTI or pick a spud like mitch clarke last year. I like to get two main ruck and then two rookies for the bench, I find that your bench player cannot be used as cash cows as unlike smaller players the rookie ruck dont score enough and therefore rise enough in value to be used as cash cows, so I get to spend more elsewhere.

So I will most likely start the year with Petrie and bench him for rnd 1 and 3. For his price 216k odd it is not alot of money sitting on the pine, and with Sandi and Jolly having byes in Round 5 and 6 (from memory) I will need someone to cover the missing ruckman fairly soon, "so bring him in round 4" i hear some people say, well to do so I'll have to burn a trade which are going to at be a premium come the end of the year (even more so than previous years), and even if I do burn a trade I will have to either:

downgrade a mid/premium - well that is more or less admitting that one of my prem/mid forwards wont work out, so what do i do if they all fire, maybe i'll have to....

sell a rookie - with only four games under a rooks belt it is possible they may have risen from 110k to 220k for a straight swap to Petrie, but by doing this I will be foregoing potential profit to trade a player to Petrie, and the thing to remember is that more than likely that player has been sitting on the bench, for the four weeks anyway the exact same reason that people are not picking Petrie.

Im not looking for big Drew to be a world beater, it would be awsomw if he avg'd 90 odd like he did in 2008-9, he is either going to spend most of the time sitting in F7 if hes scoring well or on the bench if hes not, he will cover my rucks during byes, at least 4 for the year, and any short term injuries.

hope this makes sense writing this whilst flick b/w the footy and the cricket as well as drinking few beers.

That's 1 trade gone, Petrie should be your 3rd ruckman anyway. We all know Fraser (GC) will break down Smith will go to No.1 spot then Tippett MAY come in as back up later on in the season.....GC Kids will not have the luxury and have the chance to go back to the lower leagues. So I think the GC lads will be an endless back up plan throughout the season hopefully u can find one that can produce 10 or more games together.
Hamish Macintosh has a set back now so Petrie will ruck game 2,4 and 5 I think and Hamish back rd 6 I think.

Another Petrie issue is if you picked Petrie as your number 2 you would have had to trade him out in the later rounds anyway assuming you make the finals of your private league.
Petrie is a lock as my number 3 and serves me in getting great points when my 1 and 2 are byeing it !

You fail to recognise how Goldstein fits into the equation. Petrie may ruck in spurts however Toddy will be doing the majority of the rucking.

BUMP!

Is this guy a keeper? Or just continue to yo-yo it up vs good and bad sides. Slight issue with bye in week 1 for finals in leagues also.

I don't know but Petrie is p1ssing me off...

When he is on my bench (ie this week), he scores 100+ and when he starts the field (ie last week) he scores sub 70...

I don't even care if this guy scores badly or well, but can he at least be consistent....LOL..

In relation to your quesiton, I think you should at least after the cox/sandi byes....i think Petrie is more of a player to play during byes...but having said that he can score 100+

I hear ya! Haha!

I was even throwing around idea tonight of doing - Z Smith >>> J Tippet (cha ching) and subbing Petrie into R3/4 but then have the issue of Tippet stinking up bench space on FWDs.

He is a real yo-yo of a spanner ATM. Could be a nice F7 though to save trades!? ARGH!?

Maybe you could keep him on the ground all the time?
