Without trying to sound like a broken record, we obviously need another ruckman desperately.

The PSD is looming and miraculously, an over abundance of experienced ruckman who have well and truely expired (Bryan excluded) are avaliable.

I think the football world know's the Pies will take one of them...but who?

DO we go a 23/24 yo with an apparant attitude problem but heaps of upswing?

or

Do we go a strong, bash n crash type ruck like Keating who although is injury prone, would bring invaluable final's experince and release pressure on Josh?

or

Do we go for Matty Clark who is prob the best "tap" ruckman in the last 20 yrs and also comes with heaps of experience?

Bryan isn't your typical ruck who would start in the square and play that traditional ruckman's role whereas the other 2 are...But ofcourse Bryan would be handy around the ground. We deff dont need another 196cm utililty. We have plenty of talls arouind that size now. Let him slip.

Keating is injury prone and could potentially spend more time off the ground then on it. BIG RISK but a fit Keating could prove very handy IMO. Let him slip.

Clark is a terrific tap ruckman and can be handy once the ball hits the deck. But IMO, it's his ability to give us first use of the ball that I see as being the breaker! We haven't had a ruckman like that since Monky. Imagine if we had a Matty Clark in 02-03 when we led the comp in clearances???
We've mastered winning posession off the oppostions tap and do it better than any other team, but imagine if we had someone giving us first use?Someone to hit it down the throat of a Holland or Lica? A good tap ruckman can NEVER be underestimated (although Grant Thomas would disagree). Let him stick I say.

Richards could be our 3rd choice and Josh would be able to float across half forward and give opposition coaches nightmares. Not many teams can cover Rocca, Buckley, Cloke and Fraser in the same forward line.

Also choosing one of the older boys would help Josh develop further and any bit of assistance Richards can get would prove a bonus aswell.

1. Clark
2. Keating
3. Bryan

I expect a few on here to disagree and prob go for Bryan but Im looking at the next 2yrs with the hope that Richards could take over No 1 ruck in 2009...

Thoughts?

No way will we get Clarke. IF he nominates, it'll be because St Kilda have convinced him too and they will take him before we get a chance to. I'm not ovverly excited by the other two options either, but I would take Bryan if any.

The deal is done, we have offered Bryan a 2 year contract, game over unless the Saints swoop and that is unlikely

Few issues with Clarke.

I agree he is an awesome tap ruckman but isn't the guy 33??? Our centre square players are getting old enough anyway. Can you really see him playing for another 2 years?

Also if he gets picked up it will be by the Saints before we get our pick.

We really need another ruckman but not sure who we should go for. Was disappointed we didn't go for Tippett with pick 28, instead picking Dawes who is another key position player like our first two picks and also has the knee injury. Although no point in dwelling on that now. I have confidence in Hine and hope I'm wrong about Dawes, but it seems quite risky.

Keating: Yes he is a big body but also 30 plus with dodgy shoulders.

Bryan: I would support picking him up over the older two as was really impressed with his competiveness and long kicking during his debut year. Only downside is that he is not overly tall to compete with the giants at the taps. What is this attitude prob eveyone keeps talking about??

At the end of the day (and once again I hope I'm wrong) but I think with our young players coming through we are better placed to challenge for the flag from 09 onwards. Therefore we should think more long term (as was shown by Hine picking up Reid, Brown and Dawes, long term kpp prospects) and go for the younger guy in Bryan.

I would prob also go with an untried ruck prospect over Keating/Clarke (Meyer/Jacobs/Griffiths) but Rookie draft prob more appropriate for that.

1. Bryan
2. Untried prospect
3. Keating/Clarke

Fair call Tails1....

As for Bryan's attitude, it's just what I've heard from people on here and a few Carlton supporter's I know who say that his relationship with Barry Mitchell was teetering. Mitchell was his coach this season at Bullants. And the way he kicks and a guy of his size not to get a game in a wooden spoon team says alot I think.

I just have a gut feeling that this bloke won't fit...I could and most likely will be wrong, but I reckon a bad egg is the last thing we need. I thought we got rid of all those types.

Sorry to get off the Clarke subject a bit.

But am I right in saying that Bryan came from Frankston VFL?

Is there anyone that knew anything about him then? Maybe it was just that he couldn't work with Mitchell. You all know what it is like when you have a boss you don't get along with. You just don't wont to be there and don't put in. Was Mithcell coach the year Bryan debuted?

I agree that we don't want another bad seed but if the Pies have offered him a contract as listed above they must think that they can sort him out. Although they couldn't with Taz.

There’s no doubt in my mind that’s been finalised. He would be as keen as mustard to sign with Collingwood.

What are his strengths and weaknesses?
Mobility and a booming kick, can also kick goals

Not the monster ruck we need to compliment Josh

Bryan a good bet I think, as is Cartledge. We aren't looking at a premiership next year, so why would we look in the short term, ie. Clarke, Keating.

Bryan has had good experience in the middle, and is worth being put on the list. Adds depth!

I agree we're not going for a flag next year but Im looking at it more from the point of view that Fraser and Richards could learn a thing or two working with an experienced Premiership ruckman in Clark or Keating.

MM might see a benifit in having them on the list purely for that reason.

As for him being taken before we get to him, that's a big possibility but I know St. Kilda are looking at an experieced ruck in Clark and Carlton and Ess have already made their choice. Bryan doesn't fit into Hawks plans. Port have Lade and Brogan and Bris have Leunburger, Charman etc. Tiger's have plenty aswell which leaves us at 10. Also Cartledge could go before Bryan.

Hadn't thought of it like that ala Dermie when he played for one year in the fwd 50 with Sav, to teach him how and when to lead.

Hawks are pretty keen on Cartledge from reports so they will prob take him.

Yes our ruck sitaution is collingwoods main problem.I think our midfield next year will surprise a lot of clubs.Who do we get to play as first ruck.Get keating, second choice get bryan,is 24 young and mobile and might do ok around the ground.Only one question mark with him.Can bryan match it with the likes of the big bodied ruckmen like sandilands. He may be out of his depth that's why collingwood should get the battering ram keating and rookie a developing ruck prospect like Jacobs or griffith from WA.he can't be all that bad all 209cm of him,i think that's who we should target in the psd and rookie draft's next week.If we do this watch the pies resurrect themselves like the phoenix.Notice i haven't mentioned Richards, personally i think he has been at collingwood 6 years toooooo long. The club has perservered far too long with this dud.20 games in six years and injury prone.Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrk get rid of him.

I feel your pain... We all do... but I reckon keep him on the list for now...He's only costing us about 2 of Nathan Buckley's toe's so we're better off keeping him and praying. We know ruckmen develop late...Lets hope that some ruckman develop VERY late.

Clarke is 34, what are we thinking about??
I guess if we got him get a year or two out of him and then use him to train the rucks. Though this may not happen I just thought that would be a scenario if we picked him up.

I wouldnt worry about bryan, he is exactly the type of player we need, a decent ruck option that can play football. And he can play, forget carlton pagan is a stuid idiot and has had it in for bryan from day1. He is a ten times better footballer than cameron cloke will ever be.
