Don't think it is even worth going through last night in depth...

It was clear the players were using it to blow off the cobwebs, the senior blokes never got out of 1st gear and still carried the rest of the boys over the line.

Also the conditions were horrible for the big men so can't really judge Paine, Witts and co off last night.

Yagmoor showed promise as did Steele in the middle.

Well given that I figure the doggies would win...can't complain too much. But if I never see Simon Buckley in a collingwood jumper with a football anywhere near his person again I could be really happy. I know cobwebs yada yada. But god those brain farts could kill me.

I'm pleased actually that we played Witts as a ruckman first and foremost. It's a good idea to give players another string to their bow, as we've done with Keeffe and Ceglar, while their bodies develop. However throwing Witts in there just shows what confidence we have in him to play the role he was recruited for (eventually).

I thought the conditions were quite good: no rain at all and the ground was dry (at least the grass on the hill was dry to sit on).

The only thing wrong with the conditions was that the lights were probably a tad lower and more numerous than what the players were used to, so they were sometimes losing the ball in the lights - explains why there were a few sitters dropped.

I wondered out and had a kick with some friends after the game and it's about the worst (pro or semi pro) ground I've ever had a kick on. The ground itself was ok but something about the lights made it really hard to judge. It may have just been me (and i haven't played much footy in a while!) but it just seemed all wrong. Not that that makes up for anything, but it was strange and difficult to figure out straight away.

Or i could be slightly over the hill... :D

Re watched the games and these were my thoughts:

I thought Marley Williams was a real positive out of the games. He is hard at it & a bit nasty. Looked comfortable with ball in hand. I think Hine has found another diamond in the rough. Play him in the twos to polish him up and he will be ready to start his apprenticeship under Luke Ball in 2013.

Fasolo looked fit & clean with the ball. He may need to play the Macaffer role now. He can be a real weapon off half forward this year with the super boot. Probably needs to apply more defensive pressure and make tackles stick.

Witts was OK once you ignore the hype & look at him as a young developing ruckman. He goes hard and his mark (that was not paid) backing into a pack was impressive and a sign of his potential. Ceglar was alright too, both need a good year in the twos to continue developing.

Yagmoor was clean and provided good run. He will find it hard to break in to best 22 as a half back but showed enough to be considered if Marty doesnt live up to expectations.

Paine has a long way to go yet, but he competed. Keefe I was slightly disappointed with. An opportunity to dominate in the back half but he looked off the pace and not agile enough. If he can't become a good defender I am not sure where you play him.

Shae Mac was a real surprise, he looked comfortable and handled the ball very well. Below his knees for a big guy he is very good. He seems to be reading play better as well which has been his biggest problem.
