I watched Showdown in Little Tokyo tonight.

goddamn it's brilliant. for those unaware it's made by the same guy who did commando, but with cringe and shit movie factor bumped up a couple of notches. thinking i might need to upgrade my shitty dvd copy (with a print that seems to have come from a 4th gen vhs recorded off the tv) to the new blu-ray though.

Ah, perhaps, but the beauty of AC/DC is no job is simple enough for one man. The lead guitar, the punishingly tight rhythm section, and iconic frontman all require dedicated performers.

Whatever happened to the rock n roll frontman?

Your Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Bon Scott, Bruce Dickenson, Steven Tyler, Alice Cooper... since sometime in the early 90s, every rock, punk - just guitars as a whole - band needs to have a singer that also plays an instrument! No wonder rock is dead.

Even my beloved Airbourne have a singer that also plays lead guitar. Ridiculous.

it is somewhat weird though that there's no rock anywhere in the mainstream

i mean up until 2000ish there were great rock albums coming out in the mainstream. i don't know of many since then.

Rock isn't dead, it's a bit of hyperbole, I know that it is alive. In the words of Airboune, as long as I'm alive and your alive, rock and roll will never die. It sure isn't what is used to be though, and I do reckon the lack of any frontmen in bands, like Jim Morrison for example, is a testament to that.

Plain old straightforward hard rock has disappeared from the mainstream and radio and charts more than any other genre. It is now officially underground.

Mainstream goes through cycles though, at some point some young rock band whether they are good or ordinary will have some smash hit just bringing it back to basics ala another teen spirit type deal.

But yea I get what you are saying, sometimes when I'm working and the dipsticks are playing crap radio stations I think does anyone actually rock out at all, feels like ya never even hear a guitar solo anymore.

he stabs him with a sword, then throws him onto a spinning pinwheel thing, and somehow the sword makes him stick to the pinwheel, which then shoots fireworks and spins faster, then explodes.

I would YouTube it, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Just watch the whole damn movie it is incredible with the greatest ending death scene.

Hell even (arguably) the biggest rap track of the early 2000s had a guitar based beat - Eminem's Lose Yourself.

No it didn't, at least not here. Jet were supposed to do that, The Vines were supposed to do that. There has been a lot of false starts in the last 15 years. It's gotten past the point of no return. Aussie rock acts like Airbourne are touring to big crowds and festivals in Europe but could barely manage a half time gig in Australia.

The newest "rock" bands currently getting any attention are Nickelback and Foo Fighters, and both of them were started in the 90s.

Uh think Arctic Monkeys and bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand in the mid naughties. That kind of revival.

If you think Nickelback gets literally any attention outside of meme status, man, you got some catching up to do.

my wrong bet dvd i bought from cunninghams warehouse (oh i been up to cunninghams warehouse cunninghams warehouse yessiree!)
on the first play it skipped like a mf, and the picture quality was on par with 10 year old vhs that had been dubbed 3 times.

van damme has a back catalogue that's probably the best of all the 80s action stars. and the best thing about it is his newer movies are actually watchable

sure he had a shit patch with timecop, the quest and street fighter, but whatever

kickboxer, bloodsport, death warrant, hard target, universal soldier, wrong bet, double impact... CLASSICS

and his expendables cameo was the best

He kicked arse in expendables and should have been a recurring character. Van Damme was an unfortunate casualty of the 80s action dying off, he was equally as talented as his more successful comrades in Willis and Schwarzenegger, but unfortunately without the big name franchises to sustain him in to new decades.

Stallone has always been a cut above at his very best.

It is true in some industries and music is 100% one of them.

I've never had much fun listening to the killers, it is all pretty serious. Rock should be fun more often than not, and Franz Ferdinand are indeed so basic it comes off more indie than hard rock.
