The meme focuses on the word Bond, containing the quadfecta of Shane Bond, Shane Bond, James Bond 007 and Bonds underwear. The viewer is subtly asked the question, just who is this Shane Bond character working for? The New Zealand cricket team, or the Port Adelaide Football Club? This is offset by images of Australian tennis players Nick Kyrgios and Pat Rafter, who should share allegiances in their nationality and choice of underwear brand, but they are often pitted against eachother when people discuss the ideal behaviour of an athlete representing Australia on the international stage.

In a time that has been described as the "renaissance of memes" [citation needed], this meme has been an oft cited example of why memes should be considered art.

These days I get more pleasure from seeing some wild underdog from Wherethe****istan come from nowhere to claim a medal than I do from an Aussie Gold in most sports.

Especially the swimmers. Entitlement just oozes out of most of those pricks and prickettes.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the swimmers either. Especially those Campbell sisters and their posh north shore accents.

So how about the beach volleyball outfits?

I saw a series of photos yesterday with black bars across their clothed bits.
Made for some interesting images.

Edit: here's the link.

Technically it's ok for work but be warned, the censor bar makes you realise how little the volleyballers wear.

I'd prefer it if the Olympics just dropped all the National Pride herpa derps to be honest.

It's all peace, love and unity through sport at the opening ceremony and then nek minnit let's go fight other countries for our countries honour OI! OI! OI!

The Refugee Olympic Team has it sorted.

Outside of Rohan Dennis in tomorrow's time trial i'm not really following the results of any other athletes. And I'm not following Dennis out of some sense of national pride, I'm following him because I ride a bike, follow his career, and regularly ride the same roads as he trains on which, rightly or wrongly, gives me a sense of connection.

Dylan, that's a rubbish summary.

Fair enough.

I'm not against the competition and enjoy watching a lot of the events, but I just don't get the need to nationalise it. If anything it just creates a more uneven playing field as the athletes from richer countries will inevitably get more government funding. I guess that forms part of the underdog appeal for me.

I'm more interested in seeing the best in action as opposed to which arbitrary political sectoid of the globe has best bought their way up the medal tally.

I'm pretty much like this in any field of sporting endeavour. Can't remember the last time I wanted an Australian to win anything simply because he or she is Australian.

Sometimes, like yesterday when that Australian girl came 5th in her swimming final and had a bit of a cry in front of the poolside interviewer, I have a hard time feeling any sympathy. I mean yeah, you poured your heart and soul into this event and missed out on a medal, but geez, I'd give anything to have just gone to an Olympic Games and soak up all that shit up at some point in my life. Not to mention she'd already won a gold the night before and still had 2 or 3 events to go. I mean, **** me!!!

She's probably in grieving over the fact that her impending Milo sponsorship just lost a zero.

That's all relative though, you can't criticise somebody for caring...surely.
