Did it? Is this a thing that clubs do or is it just more media kicking the shit out of Essendon?
It's a thing clubs do. When have any of our prime-aged best 22 players ever been UFAs before this? And is it really all that surprising that either Dodoro didn't set it up properly at the end of 2023, or that the interim list management arrangements missed it while trying to transition the role?

Georgia Harvey was our contract admin person in the list management team up until recently, she moved into head of VFLW and women's recruiting in her own right and there's someone else in that role now.

Prior - one year deal
Liam Mcmahon - one year deal
Shiel - delisted
ADJ - delisted
Menzie - delisted
Draper - Seemly gone

4 off the list so far

can someone make a thread devoted entirely to list cuts without any of the list management/trade hypotheticals that usually come with it. I'd do it, but I cant be bothered
And here I was thinking we'd have to wait till next season for the another death riding thread. :p

Adelaide is the blueprint to follow. Lure a couple of A-grade imports (Dawson, Rankine), some useful role players (Keays, Keane, Neal-Bullen, Cumming, Peatling, Hinge), nail your high draft picks (Thilthorpe, Curtin, Rachelle, Michalanney). Easier said than done obviously, but our fortunes can change quickly if we get the recruiting right these next 2-3 off-seasons.

There was an article in the age a couple of months ago suggesting we are using the crows and lions rebuild as a blueprint

How many drafted how many traded/FA?

I think ANB is incredibly underrated huge tank, uses it well going inside 50, sticks tackles and most importantly just knows where to run when he's not around the ball whether his team has it or not.

He's a gun. Sets standards on and off the field much like Dunkley. Impossible for Melbourne to replace him.

Cant say you are wrong, Adelaide are a good blueprint.

Don't forget though that Rankine and Dawson were both from SA - in that regards it made it easier as they wanted to go home. Essendon cant do that as easily as well because more fish in the pond.

I especially like what Adelaide did with Thilthorpe. At the time he wasn't the highest touted draft player at Pick 2 but they backed him in as he was from Adelaide. Has paid off massively for them.

Our drafting and player development has been historically shit. So we are starting behind always it feels.

The size of the job in-front of Rosa cannot be underestimated.

Thilthorpe was for sure a top five pick though. Maybe went one or two higher but he was taken in the right range.

yeah the rankine/dawson 1-2 punch is hard to replicate when you're one of 10 vic teams battling for the "go home" factor. And Rankine was always earmarked an elite player so its not like they found a bargain there.

Dawson on the otherhand is some great recruiting regardless of go home factor, no one would've expected him to be an AA inside mid and captain when he was a half back flanker for Swans.

This is the only important point. Nailing your high end picks is 90% of the battle, the rest will take care of itself.

Build it and they will come.

Yes and no.

What it really shows is you need about 6 elite guys to have a chance. How you get them doesn’t matter that much

drafting well is just the most economical way to do it
