It's time to start experimenting.

Riewoldt wants to win, wants to be involved but is getting man handled out of most games by 2 or 3 opponents. I think it might be time to move him away from FF for a while and see if we can't use him more effectively in another position. I'm not sure if he has the tank for it but i can't see any harm in trying to play him on the wing like Richo or at CHF in a style like his cousin plays. The one thing i did notice yesterday is his forward line delivery was superb, which has been one of our biggest weaknesses.

I'm not suggesting this as a permanent move but if we could move him away from FF and instead play the likes of Post, Vickery and Griffiths there it could go a long way to their development, which in turn helps Riewoldt's performance when he moves back there.

Also if we could have Riewoldt running into the forward line to take marks then it is going to make him 100 times harder to defend because teams won't be able to double or triple team him.

Riewoldt needs to b versatile and play in different roles and should not just b a ff , one positional players r becoming a thing from the past .

It's an interesting possibility. Game by game decision depending on the condition of opposition backlines. The thing is while Jack cops this attention other team members have to step up as alternative avenues to goal. One of the questions that needs to be asked is what is best for the overall long term development of the team??

Why is it time to start experimenting? Isnt it good enough we are just one game outside the 8.

Experimenting is another word for changing our structure, and that breaks team patterns. In the past with Wallace and Frawley we had a different structure every second week. For once we a stable and the players fully understand their role.

The recent addition to the Tiger bandwagon David King, said today "Round 24 Richmond v North will determine the final number 8 spot" and the way other teams around us and also Essendon are patchy its a realistic possibility.

Change nothing.

I reckon he'd be good at CHF. And it doesn't stuff up structure. Its the same structure but with different players. Vickery would be good out of FF too. As would Griff when he comes back into the side.

Didn't he play a traditional CHF role up at the gabba last year to great effect?

Zero point putting him on the wing though.

Have him push up the ground for sure, but not a pure CHF either. But as the OP said he is one of our most clever and skilled users of the ball going inside 50 so I wouldn't call it a waste of his talent, as long as he also plays a large percentage of the game from the goal square.

Probably has the best set shot of any genuine 'forward' for years. Why move him out of the forward 50 at all when we already know hes the best in the league at what he does?

In saying that, he provided two nice inside 50s on the weekend.

I think we should look to clear out our forward line more often and give him more 1on1s, or give him room to lead into.
This 3 talls and a few smalls and bomb it long stuff is wearing thin and making us predictable imo.

Anyhoo i thought that mark he took in the 3rd was a sign he's getting his confidence and balance back again.

Seems to work for Collingwood, and I wouldn't rate their forward line much higher than ours ignoring age and experience.

maybe..just maybe...he could make more fast running leads as opposed to staying in the same general area close to the goal square?

He was making them until he injured himself last night. The problem was that we still can't kick going inside 50. Instead of Newy, Lids, or Conca (probably our best three players at hitting leading targets, except for Jack who is obviously leading at that point and can't kick to himself), it was players like White who were kicking it inside 50. When I saw Deledio handball it to King, I nearly cried. Ditto any player on the list handballing to Miller.

100% agree with this. This is a problem that is really highlighted when we play at the SCG, and one of the reasons that we have such a poor record here. Too many times yesterday we had far too many blokes down there. At times, we had almost all our players forward of the centre, and nobody left back to do any defending when the ball spilled out. We need to create some space inside the forward 50. It is so easy for the Swans (and similarly well-drilled teams) to crowd around our forwards by the time the ball goes in.

I do believe we should mix it around a little , he is too good a player to be so little involved in the contest...has been this way for 5 or more weeks...It will change this week when the BIG "G" returns
fully agree with this..he has the ability to generate scores for the team from much further out than just full fwd. I think it was against Ess he did that great left foot pass to someone streaming into goal. I'd like to see more of that a few minutes every quater.

This is the problem that haunts Dimma. He has JR sitting at FF, catching a cold, whereas if he had someone that he could swing into the FF position, who at the very least could offer a contest, then he could literally swing JR in at CHB to at least get him involved in the game. JR could and would get involved if he was where its at. Problem is he is fast becoming RichoII in our FL being tripled teamed each week. We better get this right dudes, or we are back to the future before you know it. ;)

Roaming in the forward half, ok. Anywhere else, no.
Our talls arrangement has been working quite well. Jack is very good at ground level (tho he's been off the boil a bit) and Ty is very good at ground level for his height, and has a better grasp of the forward structure (his game against Fletcher was a perfectexample). As has been said a million times, Miller provides structure and experience. (his move to the back line line really screwed us up at the Sydney game)

I have been saying he needs to lead more in the F50, and get on his bike and get involved in general play more up the ground. And I have alos been flamed for it.

I'm sure if it's not Jacks fault or not, as Hardwick might be telling him not to lead and stay in the square  Either way, too good a player to be playing the role he currently is.

his kicking is absolutely superb. i know he's a goal kicker, and without him at FF there aren't many other legitimate targets for our midfield, but when he's out of touch like he is currently, I think he's better roaming around at CHF as well, perhaps delivering to Vickery (or even Rance) with King and Nahas crumbing.

This wekk i feel he should be a stay at home FF, occasionally moving up to CHF. Without Merrett, who usually takes him, Riewoldt hopefully should kick more than the 2 and 3 goals of the past month he has been kicking.

He played chf against St.Kilda last year and kicked a bag. I am actually confused as to what is going on this year, at the start of the year Hardwick said he was going to move Riewoldt to chf but he has played closer to goal this year then he did last year?

Last year Riewoldt used to run up the ground, I remember him taking screamers across half back and many marks on the wing... Has he just got a bit to confident this year and lazy or has it been the coaches decision to keep him inside the forward 50?

good question. dimma did say that and we havent seen it at all with the 3 tall forward setup.

really wanting to see griff and post step up.

for this week, which can potentially be season over, Id rather we exploit Merretts absence.

Might have merit later on, but this week may be good week for Jack to get back amongst the goals.
