IMO we are a tall defender short with that side (in terms of the bench) i would swap bradley with walsh. If Watson is unavailable as is rumoured walsh would then replace him on the bench. Also, although I would have Hunt at fullback (sink or swim) will sheedy actually play him there? the only other realistic options are Bolton, McPhee (both of which are a bit short/light if they play Lade/Primus at FF) or Lucas, who provides run off half back. If they went with Lucas at FB then McPhee, Bolton, Richards or Bradley would be CHB. Lucas should play on tredrea imo, if tredrea moves into the goalsquare, lucas moves to fullback with him - he is the only player who has the strength to contest with him one on one. Unless Hunt plays CHB on tredrea, which would be a very risky move. CHB and FB are real problems, wouldn't suprise me if sheeds plays an extra man in defence to cut off space and a) provide run, b) assist in contests at CHB on tredrea OR to help the fullback.

I think Allan will have to do a lot of dropping back into the defensive 50 to help out. On paper that's the weakest back six i can remember having in the last few years.

I wouldn't mind seeing Winder at Lloydy's feet, and Murph play closer to goal than usual.

I'd think Hirdy will have to play on the ball most of the day.

Pretty excited to see how we go after reading the bomber mag today, expecting a good effort but think we'll get done, although apparently Port aren't going too flash.

Fair point. With Watson then apparently injured Walsh gets a gig. The point about the extra man in defence - my exact reasoning for playing Rioli in the back half. Maybe have Ramanuaskas playing off a back flank also.

I reckon teams no longer play 'from the backline'.
Eg Backs, Half Backs, Centres etc.
I would suggest matchup are more likely how STG and crew go about picking the team.
Defence:
Tredrea is their best player, so our best available defender gets him, which has to be Lucas.
S Burgoyne the next best forward, so Welsh
(he may not be concentrating as well as he might, given a tough few weeks)
Cornes to play in defence as he has done preseason.
Dew - not match fit, play McPhee on him and he can run off him and get the ball forward like Wellman does.
Rioli would start back, but will probably run out of puff by half time. Up forward from then.

Midfield:
Play Allan on Primus. When Primus rests in the forward line, Allan goes too. When Primus has a shower after the game, Allan goes too. Noone else can cover him, and he would kill us if left alone.
Other midfielders: Hird, J Johnson and Peverill to tag Pickett, Bullen and Alvey in the middle. Obviously not at the same time. Bring in Mercuri and Misiti when the speed has gone off a bit, possibly after 1/2 time.

Forwards:
Lloyd will probably get Wakelin on him, but Thurstans did well on him last year. They need to get it quickly down to him, and try to kick it to him on the lead, not one out.
I expect Wanganeen will play that float across in front and cut off supply, so if they just bomb it long I am turning the telly off and going outside. He will kill us again.
I would like to think someone like Murphy (or Alvey) could get the ball 5-6 times on 50 and have a shot.
Also, Winderlich has to play up the field, not the pocket.
He's fast, and having him at Lloyd's feet is a waste.
Hille up forward as a marking option to Lloyd, and someone like Reynolds (if fit) and Winderlich coming down with the ball to get the crumbs.

B: Welsh Hunt Bradley
HB: McPhee Lucas Peverill
C: Ramanauskas Misiti Reynolds
HF: Rioli Richards Murphy
F: Alvey Lloyd Bolton
R: Hille J.Johnson Hird

INT: Bullen Winderlich Allan Walsh

I'd start the game with Hille in the ruck - he is our number one ruckman. I think its a statement we need to make. At least for the first quarter, play him there.

With so much experience out of the backline, some wise heads might be needed down there - i'd send pev to take one of the Port small fowards...

what did Primus do last year?

You usually get a couple of goals from planting a ruckman in the goalsquare against us, so that might be a go.

Chad Cornes will follow Lucas forward or back, I'd reckon, regardless of whether he's the direct opponent or not.

As for Mero's suggestion of Wanganeen floating across to cut supply, Montgomery usually does that for us, so I'd expect Wanganeen on Hird, unless we plan to give a rookie experience on Hird instead.

I'd say chuck as much talls into the line-up as possible. Sources say that Port Adelaide's New game plan is to boot it long into the forward line. If this is true, chuck all the talls down back and flood as much as possible. Probably have Hille start at Centre Half Forward and Allan in the ruck, so that Allan take the first ruck contest then floats down to CHB and let Hille take the rest of the ruck contests.

I agree, however Wellman, Fletcher, Solomon, Henneman & Laycock are all out.
We don't have that many talls left.
