Just finished watching the DVD "If I Should Fall From Grace: The Shane MacGowan Story." It is unbelievable! Such a talented man, who along with the Pogues produced some amazing music. Its like watching a freak show, this funny drunk stumbling around trying to express his life experiences through slurred conversation who despite what appears to be a total disability is still able to produce some magical songs.

Anyone have any thoughts of Shane and the Pogues, Popes etc. Favourite albums? Seen them live?

Not a huge fan but i saw that video from a friend who is a huge Pogues fan. I really like Shane and Nick Cave's version of "What a wonderful world" where you can hardly make out any words :D And Nick Cave's quote about his lifestyle in those days was pretty good.

always loved that song with the late Kirsty MaColl when the stage ends absolutely packed with people dancing and right through you can see shane just standing there in " Shane world ", the whole world passing him by...

I love the pouges and Shane McGowan and saw that doco on SBS a couple of years back.

I've never seen him live but know someone who did in Sydney. He said he was so maggoted on whatever he was on he performed slumped in a chair for the entire evening, but the crowd was still going off.

Fairytale of New York is a classic.

"It was Christmas eve yeah, in the drunk tank, and an old man says to me, I won't see another one....."

Did you rent or buy the DVD and if so where? I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Yeah i remember seeing that doco on SBS a couple of years back and was struck at how Shane is such a 'functional' drunk. Is he ever sober? I know its sad to just focus on that aspect of things becuase The Pogues were a great band and MacGown a wonderful performer, but i just found it sad to see the state MacGowan is now in, and the way people kind of romanticize it like he is another in a long line of drunken irish poet/scallywags. The reality is the bloke will be dead sooner than later and there is little romance in that.

Watching the doco it is sad but seemed like a bit of a destiny. He was on unbelievable amount of Valium by the time he started Primary school from memory!

Saw it at JB, Highpoint and picked it up.

Totally agree with you UNIT, I was actually confused as to what I should be feeling. It was depressing to see him in that state constantly but at the same time amusing.
