I've never seen a man called a mole except explicitly in the context of they are a spy double agent

He called her a mole. A specific sexist insult. He didn't call her fat, ugly, senile or wrinkly all non-gender specific.
In that case bastard is a male specific insult and gets thrown around 100 times (at least) for every time I've seen mole here (gross underestimation, probably closer to 500-1).

I use mole and slag to insult males only. Specifically because it's not the norm.

I also like to use jerk.

Retro insult.

The etymology of mole (or moll the original spelling) has always been gender specific. Bastard has not.

Maybe once. If you see a fat bloke in the street, if you wanted to insult you'd say fat bastard. I doubt anyone would say fat bastard for a woman. If they were insulting they'd say something like fat cow, which does and still is a definite gender specific insult as bastard is these days for males.

John Halbert taught an old publican mate who had a pub in North Adelaide and called him wart all the way through school.

Is wart gender specific?

The common bogan insult "mole" is actually a misinterpretation of "moll" which is sure as shit gender-specific.

(Oops, Ford got there first. But I would maintain that "mole" is a corruption derived from ignorance, not an alternative spelling)

I would contend that the range of female specific derogatory terms is so wide that bastard is not even in the ball park any more. Bastard is still a non-gender specific term.

what about campaigner?

Depends if you actually wrote campaigner or campaigner just now?

Me, I like to add two different words together, like ******** or assburger.
