We should be signing up, binging, then unsubscribing. Instead we just keep the payment ticking over and throw our money down the drain while we wait for something we might like.
I hate streaming companies and most of the offerings, but if I could limit the money spent to times of heavy use, it's money better spent.

That’s not so dumb dumb

YouTube premium is the expensive one, Spotify continually rising too. About $70 a month for the pair of them, that's getting up in Foxtel territory.

I pay $15 per month for Kayo / Binge combined.
Britbox $50 a year
I'd happily get rid of Netflix but my girls whinge.

Got to love how physical media is slowly disappearing thereby forcing people to access streaming services
I reckon torrenting had more to do with physical media die off before streaming came along. It's definitely hastened it's demise though.

Pointless discussion as 'great show' is a value judgement.
We can put some kind of objective measure on a shows standing, or greatness, based on how long they will be talked about/watched after they finished. Off the top of my head there's probably one that will stand the test of time, Succession. There are likely others as well, but compared to past eras it doesn't stack up.

Other shows that started off great, cannot sustain it (Bear, True Detective, etc), but most just are happy to plod along at mediocre to above-average level. Most of them will be forgotten about in a short about amount of time. I do have to laugh at some of the titles thrown up.

Succession wasn't that good.

That's great but you said stand the test of time. I doubt anyone will be talking about succession in 10 years.

Don’t want to derail the thread but this just highlights why it's a pointless discussion.
Haha, it will definitely be talked about in 10 years, but sure, agree to disagree. As an example, Succession is number 11 on Rolling Stone best shows of all time. Succession is one of only 10 shows ever to have won 3 or more best drama emmys. Of modern times, only Mad Men and GoT can make the same claim - also both considered great shows which have had longevity in the modern TV zeitgeist.

That's not to say I love the show from a personal POV - I don't at all but I don't see how it can be argued that it's not highly regarded.

Fair enough on derailing the thread on an individual show - but part of the OPs point was the drop in quality which I think is pretty clear.

There is a lot less quality tv. Shows like The Pitt seem to get rare these days

Short form media like Tik Tok and Instagram reels have ruined people's brains.

There are plenty of quality shows on streaming right now. You've probably just gotten older and enjoy things less now.

Everything looks better in hindsight.

True and there's a lot less time as well it feels like these days. But it is quantity over quality in recent years.

or advertising which is being shoehorned in to some platforms. which is also a decline in service quality.
Milk the Golden Goose !

But it's a classic business manoeuvre ....build your market with low entry point pricing & POD offering ....then milk, once the inevitable competition enters the market ....then rationalisation of the market occurs, and the biggest should survive the cull

Either way, the customer gets screwed these days

I loved the first season of 1899 (from writers of Dark) ....then it gets axed, because production costs are too high ....that didn't happen in the early days of Netflix
