I've been watching this a fair bit on 3am re-runs lately (not sleeping terribly well at the moment), and I'd like your thoughts on The Sullivans.

were you around when it first screened?

do you watch it in the early hours?

although I find it to be a little 'wholesome' at times (although never 'lightweight'), I think it's terribly addictive.

are you a fan of The Sullivans?

and how do you think it stacks up today?

I personally would rather watch infomercials than the sullivans cause i think its just so dull

i think a great aussie tv was prisoner, now that show was addictive

I watched it the first time it was on (late 70's) and then when it got repeated at 5am in the early 90's i set the video and rewatched it again from start to finish.
You are right it's terribly addictive and surprisingly historically accurate.

I can remember watching this the first time around. It must have been late 70's/early 80's.

I think they ran a plastics factory. Which when I was about 4 I thought they made the plastics that used to go over babies nappies!

I also remember they had flashbacks or the like of hitting a trip wire in the war against the "Japs".

Plus the photo they used to get taken at the start, the little bloke now reminds me of Michael J. Fox.

Never knew it was being repeated at that time slot. I assume Ch 9 is showing it. I'll check my tv guide now.

1. Were you around when it first screened?

Yes I was but was young and didn't really get into until the end of the series.

2. Do you watch it in the early hours?

No but I record it.

3. are you a fan of The Sullivans?

huge fan

4. How do you think it stacks up today?

Still think it's the best Aussie series ever.

The show ran from 1976-1982 and although I was a bit young to remember a lot of the early stuff I certainly remember the last few years of it, and subsequently have seen repeats of it over the years at any rate.
I don't mind the show, it has some good episodes but I couldn't watch it all the time.
Better than a lot of the lame dog food that gets on the telly now days anyway.

Bump.

Just saw this show for the first time last week (bit late) and fair to say I found it absolutely addictive.
Good story line, different, unusual characters and it's great to hear the Aussie voices and references to Australian culture, Melbourne in particular.

Grace and Tom would have to be my favourites characters.
Kitty pisses me off, the way she sort of tilts her head when people talk to her.. I mean.. WTF!?

Easily passes Neighbours and Home and Away in terms of a good Aussie family show.

Just my thoughts..

Does anyone remember 2005 when this was posted...??;)

I grew up on the Sullivans as a kid in the 1970's.

Totally loved it and was addicted to it. Havent watched it as an adult and have seen the Crawfords DVD TV ads but havent bothered.

What I liked about it was the Aussieness of it. We have a lost a lot of this I think in the past 20 years especially the lingo.

Some key memories;

The final episode ever is a heartbreaker.

Melina being shot by the Nazis on Crete.

The whole Crete eps had me scared all the time that the Nazis would catch them.

John Sullivan had a TV telemovie about his missing in action.

Papua New Guinea was also another mind mess with poor Terry.

Grace dying.

Yep great Aussie TV

Haven't got up to that but yet but damn that will be sad.

That's the great thing about it. I kinda, already, have an attachment to the characters. Great TV.

Not usually into these kinda shows but, hey, it's great! Why not? :)

Nah, knew it was going to happen. Heard it somewhere. You didn't spoil it! :)

Anyway, only mid-way through the 1st series so I've still got a long way to go

What year is that in Sullivans land?

How cool is Uncle Harry?

The other thing to look out for later on is Gary Sweet as Magpie and his mate Urger. I think there was a third as well.

Norman Yemm was sensational as well, Uncle Norm I think.

But who could ever forget Mrs Ida Jessop.

FFS, I still use 'Mrs Jessop' for a nosey person these days.

Where I am up to, the War has only been going on for a couple of weeks. So September 1939.

Haha, he is great! Witty, funny and always uses that old, great Aussie slang. Brilliant! :D

Cool! I definitely will.

Yeah, that's him. He really plays him well I thought, just a laid-back, good old bloke. Kinda refreshing.

How could she? Pretty much one of the earliest and one of the best of Australian TV. She cracks me up so much, just her snobby ways :D
Such a nosey snob. Best kinda character. Especially when she speaks to the boarders in the early episodes. You know the Duggans, Noni Hazelhurst is the wife.

Haha, my mother used to always quote Mrs Jessop. We used to have this nosey neighbour, who was a bit of a gossip. She lived down the street abit, I never understood it, I was really young but it now makes sense. Gives me a smile sort of when I think about it.

Anyway, I will be watching a few episodes tonight. See, I've got the Crawford's DVD set. Got 50 episodes! Only finished like 9, yet I'm addicted!

Yeh I think every street has one in Australia.

Ours lived directly opposite. She was in her late 60's and a biggish lady. One day she fell through one of the old weather board verandah planks and one leg went down in the cavity up to her crotch. I still remember her screaming out to her hubby who was frantically trying to lift her up 'Watch my fanny bloody hell, watch my fannnnyyyyy!'

Hahahah!

I don't think I can even imagine it! Wow :D

I remember that our nosey neighbour would always ask people over for tea. She was very suss. Reminds me of Hyacinth from that old British show Keeping Up Appearances.... no one ever wanted to have tea with her. She was a real cranky old lady

Loved it when I was a teen / pre teen. Remember being incredulous reading in the TV Week that Susan Hannaford (Kitty) was actually mid to late 20s or something like that.

Remember this as a family staple, grew up in the 70's as well.
Later on in the series I think Dave adopts some teenage kid, around Terry's age, who turns out to be a bedwetter.
I remember one line from an episode they were in and playing cricket, the kid says "I hit you for a six dad".
Don't know why that came to mind.
Uncle Harry's wife Rose who drowns in a river during a family picnic, Reg the barman, Uncle Norm, Magpie etc.

I don't want these sorts of things to happen. Like Grace dying, Dave dying and Rose dying. I want it all to stay the same but I guess without a problem there is no story

.

Jeff I think his name was, a dark red haired kid. Got into all sorts of trouble.

Would have been a sensitive storyline for the 1970's TV.

Hanaford went on to design clothes. Never really acted again IIRC.
