The Swans in 2-3 years could be in major trouble with all the losses of experienced players.

Retirements:
Hall
O'Loughlin
Kirk
Barry
Crouch

Going soon after (Over 30's):
Goodes
J.Bolton
C.Bolton
Fosdike
Jolly
R.Shaw (Yep, he will be 30 in 2011)

Already gone:
Everitt
Matthews
Davis

Other:
Kennelly (Ireland)
O'Keefe (50/50, Im not sure)

Yes, Kennelly is probably going back to Ireland after 2009 as he said his current AFL contract would be his last.

Where do you think we will be in 2-3 years?

Wow OMG! Original thread!

*yawn*

Currie will replace Currie, Veszpremi is looking like a gun up forward, Moore, Jack and Bird will run our midfield, and Richards, Malceski and Murphy will do fine in the back line. Sure there's still plenty of gaps in that, but my brief list was by no way comprehensive.

Woops yeah, Jolly.

Point is, a lot of people go on about how we'll be in a lot of trouble, but we were in a similar position after 2002, and look where we were 3 years late.

White could be a potential FF, with Veszpremi at CHF? I'm not knowledgeable enough in terms of required heights and speeds etc. so I could be way off though. White just seems to be a bit taller than Hall, but Vesz and O'Loughlin seem the same type.

Nope. Pat to midfield as soon as he gets his stamina sorted. He'll provide us with good starting pace and flair. If he can't do the mids full-time though, I can see him in a forward line role rotating into the midfield.

Grundy CHF, White FF (interchangeable, although kinda cringeworthy right now)

Murphy CHB, Faulks FB, Bruce running off the backline much like Kennelly. Brett Mer in there somewhere..

Bird, Jack, Macca, Laidlaw, Malch and Schmidt was the midfield I imagined in our future..

He can rotate, I guess. I feel he's not using the potential he has in the backline, though. We could use that to kick lace out to a leading Grundy for example.

So i guess we should be expecting stella threads by you in future!
Cant wait:rolleyes:

Vez would be wasted up fwd, expecting him to be big in the middle in years to come. A damaging midfielder, that kicks goals from outside 50 ..

Moore dont know if the middle is where his future lays. Fitness is the main question. Can see him used as a neon leon type. Impact player that plays on the ball for short bursts, then goes back to fwd pocket.

By then Buddy will be playing for us!!

That's how the Swans work. We ALWAYS recruit a marquee player into the team. The cleanout of overpaid players that aren't giving value for money (Davis) has started. Plenty room in the salary cap by then & Buddy will need to get away from the constant hounding he will get in Melbourne. He'll escape to the Sydney lifestyle where no one will know who he is & he can go out in peace.

With the extra money to spend in our salary cap, we'll be able to offer him $1.2M per year. He will pay that off in no time with the amount of bums on seats that come to see him!

All we need to worry about now is that this 'fairytale' doesn't put TripleB's nose out of joint!!;)

In all seriousness, we'll be in good hands.
Same questions were asked when Lockett, Kelly, Dunkley & Roos retired.
What is good about the Swans is that it is quite possible that 2007 (7th) & 2008 (5th) have been our lean years under the guidence of Roos.
I'm actually excited about 2009. The unknown element is how good the next lot of kids are. I believe we have some young stars in hat mix. Even if they aren't the most talented, Roos has a knack of making them part of a workmanlke machine. He's always said it about our team. If everyone does their part & follows team instructions & gives their all, then we win more often then not.

I'm extremely confident that we will finish above the Blues. They have TOO many midfielders & NO defence.
Much like St Kilda with all the gun midfielders.
Top four in 2009, 2010 & premiership in 2011!!

There I go again TripleB!!

Heard it all before, we were supposed to go down in 2003 after Kels and co retired, after 05 when Willo and Ball retired and now because .... why?

Haven't you ever been on the main board before Shotties?

It's because we have an "aging" list. As opposed to the other teams who's players are somehow suspended in a perpetual state of youth.

Don't forget the mysterious BF syndrome when a player reaches 26+ they lose all their ability to play AFL.

Next year, watch Laidlaw, Thornton, Currie and Meredith. Also keep an eye on a few other hacks: Goodes, C Bolton, Kennelly and Malceski, who unlike this year will be fit and have a full pre-season behind them. We won't be hampered by having to carry poor old Spida (God bless him) on the field, and we might even be smart enough to use him as a ruck coach.

Apparently that only afflicts ageing Swans players.

Say something negative about Essendon's ageing key forwards and watch the spittle fly from Bomberland.
Revisit the outcry over comments by Dermie et al this season suggesting Robert Harvey was past it at, how old was he? 57? 63?
Good grief, the Vic media is getting behind the push to get Ben Cousins cleared to return to the AFL, for some lucky club to draft at the age of 30 (will he be 31 when the new season starts?).
But Ryan O'Keefe is too old at 27 (28 in Jan), Kirk is near death, Hall, MOL, Goodesy, the Boltons, all too old to get out of bed most days.
Ridiculously hypocritical.

OK I am due for a rant.. sozzy you have prolly heard it all before!

Freo were 3rd last 08 yet pushed Geelong Hawks Swans Pies to within 1 goal. They kicked 23 goals less than their opposition for the year (only slightly average more than 1 per game)

When you see blokes going to Germany for operations this bloody caper is very very serious!

Swans pulled off a miracle in 05 & 06 with "Cortinas"... but they aint gunna conk yet .....but we were .....way off the pace!!!

Must MUST play the younger brigade and get games into them and have a serious look at em! If we go 1-5 in first 6 games then even if they are close... the season is virtually over before it began!

Tedeski is right ......Swans will have so much salary cap soon it is rediculous but.... so have many others prepared and made room. Need to pick up middling "could bes" and find a marque to keep the interest!

We all as fans need to regain an appreciation of good efforts and blooding youngsters otherwise when the champs pull the pin... Ka Boooom!!!

With good recruiting, followed by good marketing, is it not possible our next "marquee player" could be developed in our own ranks, rather than going on big-spending missions elsewhere?

We've still got to see them perform at senior level, obviously, but maybe the likes of a Brendan Murphy, a Dan Currie, a Dan O'Keefe or a Jesse White (or of course Pat V, and that should be Pat's nickname, just V) will turn out to be our very own home-grown marquee player, and the rest of the AFL world will be quivering with excitement when the Sydney Swans and their big-name stars come to town.
