Well we had bread too...in February.
The rest our the year we had to eat our week old dripping off a cow pat, sprinkled with sawdust.
Wireless!! We had to make do with telegraph and semaphore flags.
Of course for us the dripping wasn't ours. I had to ask people in the neighborhood, that when they had finished cooking their baked meals, instead of throwing the fat out, give it to me.
I used to get four day old bread from the bakery for a halfpenny, cut the ends off and spread the dripping over it.
Once we were a bit better off, we could season to taste with pepper.
