I noticed in the Chapman article that we are short on cap space.

How could that be? I fairly sure Swann said last year we had enough room to bring in two big signings this offseason
Also how does Essendon the cap space to fit in Chapman and make a bid for Dal Santo/Montagna, after they bought in Goddard last year on big coin??

You'd think that cap space isn't all about the current year only.

We can go ahead and top it up now then what?
How are we going to keep Walker, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Jamison, Yarran, Robinson, Garlett etc happy next year, when they come out of contract?
Fair to say that most of those boys will be putting their hands out for more money and we have hardly anyone ready to retire.

Next year gets very tricky and we have to worry about it sooner than later, should we care to keep all those boys.

Were you listening to SEN this morning?
Sounds like Brisbane are just waiting for a couple of other deals to go through to see if they can get a slightly better deal, but pretty sure Doc is Carlton bound.

Nah, the ol' wireless doesn't get SEN down here, and can't be bothered to listen to it online.

If I recall correctly Mckay also said that they would need to be careful with cap space

Not sure if it was on SEN or TWR......

As coryne said, media have NFI and seem to perpetuate this notion that Carlton are always hard up against the cap. FFS, we had the ability to offer T.Cloke $5M over 5 years last year, have only acquired Thomas on $2.5M over 4 years and recently had players on big money contracts move to significantly lower ones so HTF can we be in a tight squeeze?! All BS

I think the club should forget about Chapman and look to sign a young, half-decent delisted Free Agent instead.

Somebody like Mav Weller, Joel Wilkinson (my preference) etc

We are wasting money by committing $600k to Chapman, especially if we are already committing $400k already to J-Pod.

This is a good idea - he is best mates with Nick Graham.

Would be a pretty hard get considering

1) He is a 1st rd player, would be contracted for 2014
2) Some of the Swans forwards would be looking at retirement in the not-too-distant future. Is he considered as part of the succession plan
3) Where would we play him? He is along the lines of Darling (Too small for a KPF). Does he address a need ???

Though Ben Collins from the AFL website seems to think Pods is the missing ingredient.
Those yahoos from the AFL website also think that Collingwood should trade dane swan over for the number 1 pick in order to get tom boyd even after Swan's declaration at their B&F to stay a one club player

Get Membrey when he is out of contract next year and hasn't played a game because Tippett, Buddy and Reid are ahead of him.

Why would you pay J-Pod $400,000. The guy doesnt have a club and maybe one or 2 clubs chasing him. He would not get any more than $200,000 and even then its a ripoff.

He would be, but it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that he could be traded if he requested to return home. It just means that the ball would firmly be in Sydney's court.

2) Some of the Swans forwards would be looking at retirement in the not-too-distant future. Is he considered as part of the succession plan???

Reid (22 years), Franklin (27 years), Tippett (26 years) are their tall forwards who are still "young" enough to play for 5-6 years.

Mike Pike is turning 30, but I wouldn't label him a KPF.

Although the Swans may see him as a replacement for ROK.

3) Where would we play him? He is along the lines of Darling (Too small for a KPF). Does he address a need ???

Ideally he'd be played as a HFF - the question has always been whether or not he had a big enough tank to push up the ground and have stints in the midfield.

That remains to be seen, I don't know how he's performed in the seconds up there - but I wouldn't pay too much attention to that anyway given how poor the competition is.

We had our chance to secure Membrey last year - he slid to pick 46.

He'd be a handy player. A strong mark and a good kick for goal.

Won't be the focal point - they have Buddy and Kurt for that but as a decoy third tall who'll kick 35 goals a season and push up to the wing to provide a link up with contested marks and plenty of inside 50s.

He has good hands and a great kick would be perfect fit as a lead up forward.....
