It's been widely reported in the press that he wants 50k a week on his first pro contract. We've offered more like 25k / week which is usually what we pay our promising youngsters with plenty of incentives and pay rises activated by a certain amount of games etc etc.

Disagree. He wouldn't be the first pacy, tricky winger to come onto the scene with a bang and then stop developing.

£25k is a good offer, add loads of incentives and renegotiate when he's been good in the premier league for more than a few minutes.

Maybe, but also possible that his career fizzles out and they'd wish they took the £15m and saved the £2.5m a year in wages.

End of next season I believe. 50k is far too much for an 18 year old, no matter how good you are. And you are right in saying he could stop developing and turn into an average player. I have faith we will negotiate a happy medium.

In terms of comparison Shelvey is on 27k, with an improved offer most likely in the off season if he continues his form. You can imagine how Shelvey would feel if we gave 50k to Sterling.

Sterling tweeted a few weeks ago that he had woken up to the rumours of him asking for £50k/week and that he would never have asked for such a ludicrous amount of money. Rodgers said last week that it shouldn't be a problem and that Sterling would sign his first professional contract after he turned 18 (this week). I've got no doubt he'll sign on a long term incentive based deal starting at around £25-30k/week within the next week or so, it's just the media turning up the heat (as I'd expect them to) because he's a talented youngster yet to sign his first pro contract with 6-7 months to go on his current deal.
