Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Byrnes, adds more to the team than Varcoe and gets more of the ball.
He's been a favourite of mine for a long time, and right now he's better than Varcoe, I do think that in the next year or so Varcoe will become better than Byrnes, but right now he's not.

...And he's kind of hot.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Varcoe. Byrnes does to many stupid things when he's got the ball. Varcoe's defensive pressure is second to none.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Could define this as a choice between Turning the ball over/kicking behinds (Byrnes) AND not touching the ball unless your opposing defender has it and you chase him for 30 metres before bringing him down/sneaking a goal or two...

although byrnes is the worst disposer of the footy in the team bar kane tenace who is in his rightful spot in the magoos, at least he gets it...maybe he needs time to find his touch...

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Byrnes gets more of the ball. Thats about it. He rarely does anything with it. Horrible shot on goal.

Varcoe doesn't get as much of the ball, but he is still learning. He can kick and mark well. His defensive pressure is outstanding.

Varcoe for me.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Wow, people here have some serious Varcoe-love issues... I was expecting this poll to be more even. I think its a black thing.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Varcoe. I would be happy if he only has 10 possessions but 6 tackles inside 50 every game. I think that our ability to hold up the other teams backline is vital to us creating bigger margins and varcoe is vital to that plan, more so than byrnes.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

byrnes shits himself everytime he gets the pill, varcoe better be good in a few years. he was our first pick 2 drafts ago and wears the famous 5.

Varcoe only averages 3.5 tackles per game so he is far short of your made up figure. Travis is going to be terrific player and he may even become a midfielder in a few years as his fitness level builds up. Let's face it it this year was his first full preseason at the club and his drop in form recently is pretty typical of junior players who drop off due to their fitness.

I give Shannon the edge at the moment. I think some of you are a bit harsh on the boy and he has played reasonably well for the last 2 weeks. As I have said before if we get a few injuries Shannon will be in the side. So better we give him some game time now before everything is on the line in the finals.

yeh i couldnt be bothered looking at the stats....i just made up a figure and hoped it was close  anyway, the point was that his defensive pressure, imho, is essential to the team and byrnes does not do enough of it.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

At the moment, Byrnes. Varcoe needs a little more experience, knows what to do when he has someone to chase but looks a little lost (like Nath at times) when we've got the ball. Byrnes for his faults knows how to get his hands on the ball.

What he said ^

Some people in here show a real lack of football knowledge. Coaching staff are in charge of a team that has just won 12 straight. They have Byrnes ahead of Varcoe...they dont have this one wrong.

Just keep agreeing with the coaching staff and you will always be right?

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Don't neccessarily have to agree, but Varcoe is seriously overrated. A good player, but overrated nonetheless. Its because he is young and has flair and will be good in a couple of years time that so many are already rating him highly, when in reality the last couple of weeks he had before he got dropped he was very quiet.

Brynes disposal lets him down, but he consisently gets hold of the ball quite alot and tries his heart out week in, week out. Not to mention he is quite fast - saw him dashing after a few Freo players on the weekend and while he is no Wojac, he would be in our top 5 speed wise. SO yeah, I think Brynes gets hard done by. He probably isn't in our absolutely best 22, but am not sure Varcoe is either.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Both have their positives and both have their negatives. The decision should be which one is better suited to finals footy.

Perhaps Byrnes pips Varcoe with experience but I'd hate to think we could lose a final by a goal or two while carrying a 4 point and multiple turnover effort from Brynes.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Offensively Byrnes = Varcoe
Defensively Varcoe - Daylight - Byrnes

Which is more condusive to finals footy? Lets have a think about it. Finals footy is a tight game. Don't expect it to be anything like what we have met in the last 12 weeks. It will be contested, ferocious and inside. Keeping the pill near the sticks is going to be the key in winning matches.

Who is going to be the better troop at doing this. Varcoe hands down. His forward defensive pressure was the best in the league before his spell. I'd take Varcoe any day, even if he isn't kicking goals "he keeps the pill near the sticks" and this is more important IMO. We have established and proven goal kickers already.

correct, correct, correct :D

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

At this point of both of their careers, Byrnes is ahead of varcoe. I noticed in the last two games that Varcoe played, that the opposition had figured him out and applied a few easy shepards when running the ball out of defence. Varcoe simply bounced off. He hadn't been getting enough of the pill and his tackling had been dropping off. Byrnes the last two weeks had been getting a few touches and was able to hold a few more tackles that I dont think travis may have held on to.
There is seriously too much of a love fest with travis at the moment. Alot of people seem to have stars in their eyes at the moment. Lets all sit back, take a breath and look at things in perspective. Byrnes for now, varcoe in another year or so.

Varcoe to Return

I was on the plane beside Leigh Tudor on the weekend and got to quiz him about a number of Cats questions on the way over.

One of the things that surprised me the most was that Travis Varcoe is set to return.

Varcoe was actually going to play on Sunday as a late inclusion for Josh Hunt. This all changed when Jeff Farmer was confirmed to play as Josh was expected to line up on him, but as we know they ended up playing Harley on Farmer. Varcoe still travelled to Perth with the team.

I then asked if the coaching staff were happy with Varcoe given his drop in form over the last month. He said they were super happy with Varcoe and were keen for him to get back into the side, and said Varcoe was rested not dropped. They felt his defensive pressure inside 50m was a must. They felt Varcoe was tiring given it is practically his first year of senior footy, so they rested him for a week, then deliberately only played him for 70% in the VFL the week after, and played him on the ball for a period where he got 7 clearances and Tudor said he reminded him of Mcleod the way he broke away from the packs. With Josh Hunt playing it worked out perfectly anyway as Varcoe got to have another weeks rest because the VFL had the bye. So I would expect to see Varcoe in this week.

He also mentioned that he was trying to convince the senior coaches to rest Selwood in the lead up to the finals but was having a hard time doing so.

He mentioned they were happy with Nathan and he had gotten over his injury and was ready to go again. They love his skills below his knees and were also happy with his performance in the VFL last week.

It was good to hear some stuff from the horses mouth so to speak. I guess what it did confirm was that alot of the junk and opinions about players that gets spoken about on here is along way off the mark. Clearly the coaches have a preferred structure in mind, and given there position on the ladder and current form are going to continue with their ideal structure.
