Think Tank The Triple Crown

Will one of these teams win the treble?

  • The Mighty Cats will stroll to an all-conquering season

  • Floggingwobble will have the wood on everyone else

  • Carltoon will sack Voss mid-season and end a 30-year drought

  • Jack Watts farts in your general direction

Only two teams in the history of the VFL/AFL have won a flag + had the Coleman Medallist (or leading goal-kicker) + Brownlow Medallist all in the one season: Geelong and Colonwobble

Is history about to repeat for one of these teams?

Currently:

Geelong have the equal-highest goal-kicker (Jizza), a Brownlow favourite (Headband Man) and a good chance of winning the premiership

Floggingwad have the equal-highest goal-kicker (Jamie Smelliot), a Brownlow favourite (the Uncontested Man), and sit on top of the ladder.

We await the finals to see if one of these teams can pull off the ultimate whitewash.

Of course, the Mudpies will have to overcome their finals nemesis Geelong to get anywhere near achieving this unique treble while the Mighty Cats bide their time until their perennial September appearance.

Geelong: 1951 - premiership, Bernie Smith won the Brownlow Medal, George Ginnison was the VFL's leading goal-kicker
Collingwood: 1929 - premiership, Albert Collier won the Brownlow Medal, Gordon Coventry was the VFL's leading goal-kicker
1951 John Coleman was the leading goal kicker, and unsurprisingly there wasn't even a retrospective Coleman medalist

1929 John Coleman was 1

No, I'm going with the leading goal-kicker up to the introduction of the Coleman Medal.
So leading goal kicker including finals until 1980, leading goal kicker H&A from 1981?
You know when the AFL retrospectively awarded the Coleman Medal 1955-1980, they also awarded a leading goal kicker award for prior seasons based on H&A performance?

So the Coleman Medal doesn’t apply pre-1955. So my claim stands. Additionally, I was specific in saying Coleman Medallist or leading goal-kicker.

What was it like seeing the pre-Coleman era in person?

My point is, for the purposes of any triple crown of Brownlow, Coleman and premiership, the leading goal kicker must be in the H&A season. The AFL has retrospectively made such an award and the 1951 winner was John Coleman of Essendon.

‘Retrospectively’ being the operative word. Maybe the AFL should also grant Geelong an extra 7 premierships ‘retrospectively’ given that the VFA was the premier footy competition prior to the formation of the VFL in 1897. Fair’s fair :)

Obviously.

If 20 & 3 is the standard, 40 means you have to kick 6 😇
Huge claim, so I got my science kit out to examine this thoroughly. After running a few experiments and processing the data through the old Pentium, it seems your theory checks out. You might actually be right.
