i was at the match today
and i thort the umpires were TERRIBLE
constant frees which we deserved
especially the lloyd hands in the back whcih was so much worse then the one paddy ryder made which caused a goal

well the umps wernt that bad
for the part in which marc murphy played on
and for some reason didnt take a shot. xD

I thought they were pretty good in general today. However i can't help but bring up the Marc Murphy one in the 3rd quarter. When there are about 12-15 people around the ball, they all stop, one guy runs away with it, how you can call advantage when he is now 20m away from the pack i'm not sure. Not to mention he ran about 40m without taking a bounce. Having said that, except for that one passage of play, i thought they were pretty good.

My cousin umpired today, Jason Armstrong #26.

Was tempted to boo a few of his decisions. :D

But, knowing the fact we are related, and that he grew up a bomber fan, made me think twice (I still booed anyway). I thought overall they were ok. But thats just me, I could be biased. :D

They're always going to make a few bad calls. That Marc Murphy advantage one was a shocker. But people expect perfect performances. Just live with the mistakes. Take the good with the bad. Especially after a win.

The head high contact one Scotland (I think) received when he blatantly ducked and more or less head butted the tackler (wasn't sure who) in the arms and stomach was an absolute disgrace. What happened to play on when the head is ducked?? Sure enough we didn't touch the footy in that passage of play again and they got the goal. Didn't change the game thank god but gee it was frustrating.

I thought Jason Armstrong did a good job today. Being a one-eyed supporter I am often critical of umpires (sometimes unfairly I have to admit). Soem of McLarens decisions I didnt think much of but its unrealistic to expect umpires to get things right 100 per cent of the time

Thanks for that.

I was asking Jason on Boxing day how he would go umpiring against Essendon, given this is his first year in the AFL. We had a good laugh about it, since his whole family are pretty passionate bomber fans, just like all my extended family, and my own.

I think he was extremely impartial, hence the temptation to boo :D. I agree that the "ducking" decision for Scotland was incorrect.

I also remember Hille giving him a lecture about ruckwork after Jason paid a free against him, resulting in a swan shot at goal (the swans game). You could hear the whole conversation on TV, which was very funny. Hille was very calm, if not a bit patronisisng.

Should have an interesting story to tell this Xmas gathering. :thumbsu:

The umpires weren't too bad at all. Most of the borderline decisions went our way anyway so i dont see why your complaining. The umpires are always going to make a few mistakes so i dont see why ppl cant just learn to live with it
